Description of patients who died of pulmonary thromboembolism at the surgical services of “Aleida Fernández Chardiet” Hospital

open access: yesRevista Electrónica Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta, 2017
Background: pulmonary thromboembolism is a frequent condition found in the autopsies of hospitalized patients. Dealing with the factors associated to this disease may contribute to reduce the morality causes. Objective: to describe the patients who died ...

Implementation of a Standardized Handoff System for a General Surgery Residency Program [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Introduction: The I-PASS Handoff Bundle is an evidence based standardized set of educational materials designed to decrease handoff failures in patient care. Two of every three sentinel events , the most serious events reported to the Joint Commission,

Applications of controlled surgery in dimension 4: Examples

open access: yes, 2006
The validity of Freedman's disk theorem is known to depend only on the fundamental group. It was conjectured that it fails for nonabelian free fundamental groups. If this were true then surgery theory would work in dimension four.

Use of National Burden to Define Operative Emergency General Surgery.

open access: yesJAMA Surgery, 2016
IMPORTANCE Emergency general surgery (EGS) represents 11% of surgical admissions and 50% of surgical mortality in the United States. However, there is currently no established definition of the EGS procedures.

Perturbative 3-manifold invariants by cut-and-paste topology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
We give a purely topological definition of the perturbative quantum invariants of links and 3-manifolds associated with Chern-Simons field theory. Our definition is as close as possible to one given by Kontsevich. We will also establish some basic properties of these invariants, in particular that they are universally finite type with respect to ...

Clinical and epidemiological characterization of patients of the municipality of Puerto Padre, who underwent cataract surgery

open access: yesRevista Electrónica Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta, 2017
Background: cataract is the most frequent cause of preventable blindness in the municipality of Puerto Padre and in the country. Its treatment is surgical. Objective: to characterize the clinical and epidemiological variables in patients operated on for ...

Borromean surgery formula for the Casson invariant [PDF]

open access: yesAlg. Geom. Topol. 8 (2008), 787-801, 2005
It is known that every oriented integral homology 3-sphere can be obtained from S^3 by a finite sequence of Borromean surgeries. We give an explicit formula for the variation of the Casson invariant under such a surgery move. The formula involves simple classical invariants, namely the framing, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number.

The prevalence of frailty and its association with clinical outcomes in general surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesAge and Ageing, 2018
Objectives to investigate the prevalence and impact of frailty for general surgical patients. Research design and methods we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Studies published between 1 January 1980 and 31 August 2017 were searched from

Heegaard Floer homology and Morse surgery [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
We establish surgery formulas for filtration of the Heegaard Floer homology associated with p/q surgery on a null-homologous knot K in a three-manifold Y, induced by K_{p/q}. Here K_{p/q} is the core of the attached solid torus (which produces the surgery). This would generalize a result of Ozsvath and Szabo.

Roscoe Reid Graham (1890 to 1948): a Canadian pioneer in general surgery. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Roscoe Reid Graham, a Canadian surgeon trained at the University of Toronto, was a true pioneer in the field of general surgery. Although he may be best known for his omental patch repair of perforated duodenal ulcers-often referred to as the Graham ...
