Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Creation of Bacterial Blight Resistant Rice by Targeting Homologous Sequences of Xa13 and Xa25 Genes

open access: yesAgronomy
Bacterial blight is a destructive disease in rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). Single resistance genes often have limitations in providing broad-spectrum resistance, as pathogens continuously evolve and vary.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Who Possesses Drug Resistance Genes in the Aquatic Environment? : Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) Resistance Genes among the Bacterial Community in Water Environment of Metro-Manila, Philippines

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2013
Recent evidence has shown that antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) are ubiquitous in natural environments, including sites considered pristine.

Evolutionary conservation analysis between the essential and nonessential genes in bacterial genomes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2015
Essential genes are thought to be critical for the survival of the organisms under certain circumstances and the natural selection acting on essential genes is expected to be stricter than on nonessential ones.

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Insight of Genus Corynebacterium: Ascertaining the Role of Pathogenic and Non-pathogenic Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
This review gathers recent information about genomic and transcriptomic studies in the Corynebacterium genus, exploring, for example, prediction of pathogenicity islands and stress response in different pathogenic and non-pathogenic species. In addition,

A Quantitative Approach to Investigating the Hypothesis of Prokaryotic Intron Loss [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using a novel method, we show that ordered triplets of motifs usually associated with spliceosomal intron recognition are underrepresented in the protein coding sequence of complete Thermotogae, archaeal and bacterial genomes.

SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow
