Visualization of Bacterial Genes in Action

Science, 1970
The morphology of active structural and putative ribosomal RNA genes was observed by electron microscopy after lysis of fragile Escherichia coli cells. Conclusions drawn are: most of the chromosome is not genetically active at any one instant; translation is completely coupled with transcription; the 16 ...

Bacterial genes in humans?

Trends in Biotechnology, 2001
In the June issue of Trends in Biotechnology, we reported on a paper in Science (Steven Salzberg et al., 8 June) that cast doubt on the original conclusions of the two human genome sequence reports (Nature, 15 February and Science, 16 February).

Bacterial polysaccharide synthesis and gene nomenclature

Trends in Microbiology, 1996
Gene nomenclature for bacterial surface polysaccharides is complicated by the large number of structures and genes. We propose a scheme applicable to all species that distinguishes different classes of genes, provides a single name for all genes of a given function and greatly facilitates comparative studies.

Dynamics of Bacterial Gene Regulatory Networks

Annual Review of Biophysics, 2018
The ability of bacterial cells to adjust their gene expression program in response to environmental perturbation is often critical for their survival. Recent experimental advances allowing us to quantitatively record gene expression dynamics in single cells and in populations coupled with mathematical modeling enable mechanistic understanding on how ...

DNA Microarrays and Bacterial Gene Expression

2003
Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the construction and utilization of two-color-spotted DNA microarrays in the analysis of bacterial gene expression. These microarrays consist of either polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products or long oligonucleotides spotted on an amine-coated glass surface.

Control of Bacterial Gene Expression

1982
A myriad of gene products are involved in cellular metabolism, in the replicative and expressive machineries and in structural components. However, during the (normal) bacterial life cycle, certain products are required only at particular stages. Moreover, adjustment in cellular metabolism may be necessary when the bacterium is confronted with an ...
