Immediate-Early Genes and Synaptic Function

open access: yesNeurobiology of Learning and Memory, 1998
Classical studies have demonstrated a role for protein synthesis in long-term memory. The focus of our research is to identify the proteins that are essential for memory and to discover how they contribute to activity-dependent neuronal plasticity. We have developed whole-animal models that maximize the induction of activity-dependent genes and have ...

α-glucosyl-rutin activates immediate early genes in human induced pluripotent stem cells

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2021
Rutin is a natural flavonoid glycoside found in several vegetables and fruits such as buckwheat and onion. Rutin has a range of pharmacological effects that include anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer activities.

Modulation of viral replication, apoptosis and antiviral response by induction and mutual regulation of EGR and AP-1 family genes during coronavirus infection

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2022
Coronaviruses have evolved a variety of strategies to exploit normal cellular processes and signalling pathways for their efficient reproduction in a generally hostile cellular environment.

NPR1-Independent Activation of Immediate Early Salicylic Acid-Responsive Genes in Arabidopsis

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2004
Salicylic acid (SA) is a key signal for the activation of defense genes in response to stress. The activation of late defense genes by SA, such as PR-1, involves the participation of the NPR1 protein.

Immediate Early Genes in Blood Pressure Regulation

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Hypertension, 1996
The immediate early genes c-fos and c-jun are transcription regulating factors. c-fos expression is widely used as a marker of neuronal activation and has been used in this study to identify those neurons, presumably vasomotor neurons, that are activated after interventions that alter blood pressure. c-fos and c-jun are expressed in the rostral ventral

Brain-wide neuronal activation and functional connectivity are modulated by prior exposure to repetitive learning episodes

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2022
Memory storage and retrieval are shaped by past experiences. Prior learning and memory episodes have numerous impacts on brain structure from micro to macroscale.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Synapse development organized by neuronal activity-regulated immediate-early genes

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Medicine, 2018
Neuroscience: Environment-driven gene activation Immediate-early genes (IEGs), genes that are rapidly and transiently activated by cellular stimuli, regulate the interactions between neurons and key brain functions.

The role of histone modifications in transcription regulation upon DNA damage

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review discusses the critical role of histone modifications in regulating gene expression during the DNA damage response (DDR). By modulating chromatin structure and recruiting repair factors, these post‐translational modifications fine‐tune transcriptional programmes to maintain genomic stability.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
