TENDÊNCIAS GENÉTICAS PARA CARACTERÍSTICAS DE CRESCIMENTO EM REBANHOS NELORE CRIADOS NA REGIÃO DO TRÓPICO ÚMIDO DO BRASIL

open access: yesCiência Animal Brasileira, 2013
(Co)variances, heritability and genetics change were estimated for weight at 120 (W120), 210 (W210), 365 (W365), 450 (W450) and 550 (W550 ) days of age in Nellore cattle from the Humid Tropical region of Brazil. A total of 65,876 records of animals born

Persistency of Prediction Accuracy and Genetic Gain in Synthetic Populations Under Recurrent Genomic Selection

open access: yesG3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, 2017
Recurrent selection (RS) has been used in plant breeding to successively improve synthetic and other multiparental populations. Synthetics are generated from a limited number of parents ( Np ) , but little is known about how Np affects genomic ...

Maximizing Genetic Response in Breeding Schemes of Dairy Cattle with Constraints on Variance of Response

open access: yes, 1994
Predicted genetic progress in dairy cattle breeding schemes was maximized with the variances of selection responses constrained, i.e., restricted effective population sizes. This restriction would also lead to schemes with acceptable rates of inbreeding (

Three genetic developmental stages of papillary renal cell tumors: Duplication of chromosome 1q marks fatal progression

open access: yes, 2009
Papillary renal cell tumors (RCT) make up a cytomorphologically and biologically heterogeneous group of kidney cancers including renal cell adenomas (RCA) and renal cell carcinomas (RCC). To find genetic markers landmarking the tumor progression, we have

Gain Control and Sparse Representations in the Olfactory System of the Locust and Fly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The giant GABAergic neuron (GGN) is a single, paired, non-spiking neuron that arborizes extensively in the mushroom body (MB) of the locust (Leitch and Laurent, 1996), where it overlaps with the dendrites and the axons of Kenyon cells (KCs).

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Genetic trends in the Zimbabwe’s national maize breeding program over two decades

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Monitoring genetic gains within breeding programs is a critical component for continuous improvement. While several national breeding programs in Africa have assessed genetic gain using era studies, this study is the first to use two decades of ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Genetic yield gains of winter wheat in Germany over more than 100 years (1895–2007) under contrasting fertilizer applications

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2018
For highly productive regions such as Germany, the increase of wheat grain yields observed throughout the 20th century is largely attributed to the progress in crop breeding and agronomic management. However, several studies indicate a strong variability
