Predicting cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attack in healthy individuals and those with dysmetabolism: a machine learning approach combined with routine blood tests

open access: yesScientific Reports
Ischemic cerebral infarction is the most prevalent type of stroke, causing significant disability and death worldwide. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a strong predictor of subsequent stroke.

Counting Sheep: Potential Applications of DNA Analysis to the Study of Medieval Parchment Production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This chapter follows up on several preliminary tests that have shown that DNA survives in medieval parchment manuscript leaves and may be extracted and analyzed, and offers suggestions for defining and implementing future genetic studies of parchment.

Multiple ETS family transcription factors bind mutant p53 via distinct interaction regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutant p53 gain‐of‐function is thought to be mediated by interaction with other transcription factors. We identify multiple ETS transcription factors that can bind mutant p53 and found that this interaction can be promoted by a PXXPP motif. ETS proteins that strongly bound mutant p53 were upregulated in ovarian cancer compared to ETS proteins that ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Patient Attitudes Toward Genetic Testing for Inherited Predispositions to Hematologic Malignancies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Although inherited predispositions to hematologic malignancies have previously been considered extremely rare, approximately 12 causative genes have been implicated in the last decade.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Evaluating parental personal utility of pediatric genetic and genomic testing in a diverse, multilingual population

open access: yesHGG Advances
Summary: There is increasing evidence of the clinical utility of genetic and genomic testing (GT); however, factors influencing personal utility of GT, especially in diverse, multilingual populations, remain unclear.
