ABSTRACT Background Sickle cell disease (SCD) has undergone major changes in the last decades. Its prevalence has been steadily increasing and numerous advances have been made in the management of the disease. However, the effect in real‐life setting of these major changes is unknown, particularly in a Canadian environment. Procedure We aimed to assess

Flower organ identity in rice is mainly determined by the A-, B-, C- and E-class genes, with the majority encoding MADS-box transcription factors. However, few studies have investigated how the expression of these floral organ identity genes is regulated

ABSTRACT Background Embryonal tumors comprise the majority of malignant central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms diagnosed in children under 3 years of age. Compared with their counterparts in older children, these tumors exhibit distinct molecular biology and a more aggressive clinical phenotype, while their management is complicated by the heightened ...

Construction of complete degradation pathway for nitrobenzene in Escherichia coli
Nitrobenzene is widely present in industrial wastewater and soil. Biodegradation has become an ideal method to remediate organic pollutants due to its low cost, high efficiency, and absence of secondary pollution. In the present study, 10 exogenous genes

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Genetically modified foods and allergy [PDF]
2015 marked the 25th anniversary of the commercial use and availability of genetically modified crops. The area of planted biotech crops cultivated globally occupies a cumulative two billion hectares, equivalent to twice the land size of China or the United States. Foods derived from genetically modified plants are widely consumed in many countries and

Organoids in pediatric cancer research
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Genetic modifiers of vision and hearing [PDF]
The identification of 'disease genes' and the mutations within them has greatly enhanced our understanding of normal function in the eye and ear. At the same time, it has become clear that these single-gene mutations must reside in a permissive genetic background for a disease phenotype to manifest.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

A rice exocyst subunit gene SEC3A is required for anther dehiscence
Anther dehiscence controls optimal interaction between pollen and stigma, thereby determining the successful sexual reproduction. The regulators or mechanisms of this process remain elusive.
