Herbs, sometimes saprophytic. Leaves opposite, simple, often connate at the base. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, bracteate and bracteolate, arranged in cymose inflorescences or flowers solitary and terminal. Calyx 4—5-merous, tubular, often with discoid scales at the inner base.
