High‐Precision Prediction of Auroral Substorm Expansion Phase Evolution Using a Spatio‐Temporal Attention Deep Learning Model

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Auroral substorms are a key manifestation of solar‐terrestrial interactions and the release of energy within the Earth's magnetosphere. The expansion phase, which is characterized by rapid changes in auroral morphology and intensity, poses significant space weather risks to satellite operations and communication systems.

Revisiting the Ionospheric Disturbances Over Low Latitude Region of China During Super Typhoon Hato

open access: yesSpace Weather
The ionosphere exhibits complex variations due to the influences from above and below. To distinguish the source of ionospheric disturbances is important for understanding the variation process and the coupling mechanism among different regions.

AI‐Based Improvement of IRI‐2020 Electron Density Profiles With COSMIC Radio Occultation Data

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract In this study, we propose an AI‐based method to improve the electron density profiles generated by the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)‐2020 model using the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) radio occultation (RO) data.

High‐Latitude Electrodynamics and Thermospheric Density Variations During the 2024 Gannon Storm

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract This study investigates high‐latitude electrodynamics and thermospheric density variations during the 2024 Gannon's storm. First, the auroral precipitation module of Auroral Spectra and High‐Latitude Electric field variabilitY, ASHLEY‐A, is improved to more accurately capture the location of auroral precipitation observed during this ...

Data‐Driven Satellite Drag Modeling Without Dynamic Knowledge of the Atmosphere

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Increasing congestion in low Earth orbit (LEO) from new satellite deployments and a growing debris population has made accurate orbital trajectory prediction essential for anticipating and avoiding potential collisions on a regular basis. Atmospheric drag is usually the dominant source of propagation error across much of LEO, especially during

The Non‐Linear Dependence of Daily Maximum Ionospheric Total Electron Content on F10.7

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Daily 10.7 cm solar flux, the F10.7 index, is a key parameter for the ionospheric state. Global maps of ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) offer almost continuous multidecadal coverage. We find that the global daily maximum of TEC saturates with daily F10.7.

Meridional currents during equatorial geomagnetic disturbances

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1993
The annual average solar daily variations of the eastward component of the geomagnetic field, Y, at the equatorial stations, Kodaikanal and Huancayo indicate an increase on disturbed than on quiet days. With increasing daily mean geomagnetic activity index Ci, there is a systematic increase of daily mean value of Y and the systematic decrease of the ...

Low Frequency Oscillation Observed in the Ionosphere Around the Substorm Onsets

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract Three substorm events in which Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft are geomagnetically co‐located with substorm onset locations in IMAGE far ultraviolet auroral images are analyzed. A Hilbert‐Huang Transform is used to decompose the DMSP B⊥ ${B}_{\perp }$ in the ionosphere to its intrinsic mode functions. A dominant mode
