Tutorial on geomagnetic storms and substorms

IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2000
Geomagnetic storms have been studied for more than a century and substorms for nearly four decades. The space era which began in the late 1950s has ushered new discoveries and given new practical importance to this scientific discipline as we continue to amass technological assets in space.

A Hydromagnetic Theory of Geomagnetic Storms

Geophysical Journal International, 1962
Summary The following hydromagnetic theory of geomagnetic storms is outlined: (a) A solar ion stream envelopes the geomagnetic cavity exerting radial pressure and tangential frictional drag. The former creates an O-type hydromagnetic wave, the latter E-type (twist) waves. The frictional effect may also scatter 104 eV electrons into the cavity

Forecast of recurrent geomagnetic storms

Advances in Space Research, 2011
Abstract Long-term forecast of space weather allows in achieving a longer lead time for taking the necessary precautions against disturbances. Hence, there is a need for long-term forecasting of space weather. We studied the possibility for a long-term forecast of recurrent geomagnetic storms.

Is ozone affected by geomagnetic storms?

Advances in Space Research, 1999
Abstract A brief review of effects of strong geomagnetic storms on total ozone content, targeted to effects observed near the latitudinal circle of 50N, shows that at these latitudes geomagnetic-storm related changes in total ozone can at least partly be attributed to storm-related changes in atmospheric circulation.

On F2 response to geomagnetic storm

Acta Geodaetica et Geophysica Hungarica, 2003
The interaction of solar wind with earth’s magnetic field leads to a number of modifications of the F region global structure. Furthermore, the absorption of solar wind energy has the same phase all over the globe throughout the year. All these imply that there could be simultaneity in UT in global response of some F2 parameters to geomagnetic storms ...

The Evolution Characteristics of Geomagnetic Disturbances During Geomagnetic Storm

Chinese Journal of Geophysics, 2007
AbstractWith the data of the geomagnetic meridian observatories in China, 25 geomagnetic storms in the period of 1997 to 1999 have been analyzed by using three kinds of methods which are the method of Natural Orthogonal Components (NOC), Correlation analysis and Fourier analysis. Three steps have been adopted to decompose the storm‐time variation (Dst)
