Octree-based production of near net shape components
Near net shape (NNS) manufacturing refers to the production of products that require a finishing operation of some kind. NNS manufacturing is important because it enables a significant reduction in: machining work, raw material usage, production time ...

Repairing triangle meshes built from scanned point cloud [PDF]
The Reverse Engineering process consists of a succession of operations that aim at creating a digital representation of a physical model. The reconstructed geometric model is often a triangle mesh built from a point cloud acquired with a scanner ...

Bat Species Comparisons Based on External Morphology: A Test of Traditional versus Geometric Morphometric Approaches. [PDF]
External morphology is commonly used to identify bats as well as to investigate flight and foraging behavior, typically relying on simple length and area measures or ratios. However, geometric morphometrics is increasingly used in the biological sciences

An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

A Geometric Approach to Tree Shape Statistics [PDF]
This article presents a new way to understand the descriptive ability of tree shape statistics. Where before tree shape statistics were chosen by their ability to distinguish between macroevolutionary models, the ``resolution'' presented in this paper quantifies the ability of a statistic to differentiate between similar and different trees.

The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Construction of Local-Shape-Controlled Quartic Generalized Said-Ball Model
Said-Ball curves and surfaces are extensively applied in the realm of geometric modeling. Their appearance is only decided by the control points, which produces a great deal of inconvenience for the shape design of sophisticated products.

On the Probabilistic Shaping and Geometric Shaping in Optical Communication Systems [PDF]
We introduce and compare typical shaping schemes suitable for optical communications. The geometrically shaped-quadrature amplitude modulation (GS-QAM) formats are characterized by the non-equidistant spacing of constellation points, transmitted uniformly, and applied to improve system capacity.

Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.
