Irreversible evolution of dislocation pile-ups during cyclic microcantilever bending

open access: yesMaterials & Design
In single crystals, plastic deformations are predominantly governed by dislocation movement and interactions. The group of dislocations that creates strain gradients, known as geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), also deterministically ...

Imaging the Thickness‐Dependent Formation of Schottky Barriers in Metal–Semiconductor van der Waals Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Using nanobeam photoemission, we demonstrate imaging of the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane electric field landscape within a metal–semiconductor van der Waals heterostructure. We provide evidence for Schottky barrier formation that depends on the semiconductor thickness. ABSTRACT Achieving high‐performance optoelectronic devices based on two‐dimensional van

Investigation of size effect on flow stress of Cu-3wt.%Ag-0.5 wt%Zr thin sheets at room and cryogenic temperature based on geometrically necessary dislocation evolution behavior

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The influence of the grain sizes ranging from 23.4 to 69.2 μm on mechanical properties of Cu-3wt.%Ag-0.5 wt%Zr thin sheets was investigated by conducting uniaxial tensile experiments at room temperature (RT 298 K) and cryogenic temperature (CT 77 K).

Decoupling Electron and Phonon Transport in 3D‐Printed Bismuth Telluride via Synergistic Compositional Co‐Enrichment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, we use direct ink writing (DIW) to 3D print Bi2Te3‐based materials and naturally induce hierarchical functional nanostructures, which reduced the lattice thermal conductivity by half, resulting in high zT of 0.87and 0.89 in p‐type and n‐type compounds, respectively, competitive with commercial materials.

In-situ tensile deformation of multiphase stainless steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
In this work, the microstructural evolution of a multiphase stainless steel with martensite (α′), delta-ferrite (δ) and reversed austenite (RA) during tensile deformation was systematically investigated by combining in-situ EBSD and TEM techniques, with ...

Synergistic strengthening driven by boundary-dislocation architectures in hot-rolled NiV7 alloy

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Single-phase NiV7 alloy plates were hot-rolled at 900 °C, 1050 °C and 1200 °C, respectively. Electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses reveal that elevating the rolling temperature enlarges the average grain size from 18.2 μm to 32.5 μm and ...

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.
