Gestation group housing of sows

2015
Group housing of gestating sows is currently replacing individual housing systems around the world. Modern group housing systems allow performance in groups to be equal to that in individual housing systems. A crucial element in the success of a housing system is the way in which it deals with social (aggressive) interactions of the animals: sows will ...

Judgement bias testing in group-housed gestating sows

Behavioural Processes, 2019
Societal concerns about animal welfare have triggered the movement of gestating sows from individual stalls to group housing in many countries. Common methods of assessing sow welfare focus on overt physical ailments, and potentially neglect psychological stressors.

Serum biochemical reference values for gestating and lactating sows

The Veterinary Journal, 2007
Reference values have been established for serum biochemical parameters in sows from high producing pig herds. In total, 132 clinically healthy sows from eight breeding herds were serially sampled three weeks and one week before farrowing, and at one week and three weeks after farrowing.

Environmental Suitability of Housing For Gestation Sows

Livestock Environment VIII, 31 August - 4 September 2008, Iguassu Falls, Brazil, 2008
As swine production has been developed in Brazil, most research has been carried out in traditional areas of knowledge such as genetics, nutrition and reproduction. To obtain high quality meat is the main goal of producers, and welfare issues are not much understood. Behavior studies are helpful in showing the animal response to certain exposures, such

Gestational and Periparturient Periods of Sows: Serum Chemical and Hematologic Changes During Gestation

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1972
SUMMARY Hematologic and serum chemical determinations were made on days 30, 60, and 90 of gestation in each of 32 cows. Serum calcium concentration was significantly higher on day 60 of gestation than on days 30 and 90. Phosphorus concentration was significantly higher on days 30 and 60 than on day 90.

Effects of stall width and sow size on behaviour of gestating sows

Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 2007
The adequacy of gestation stalls to accommodate the postural behaviour of sows is an important welfare concern. The behaviour of 184 sows from parity 0 to 9 was studied in stalls of four widths (55, 60, 65, and 70 cm). Postures, frequency of posture changes, contact with the stall and udder extension beyond the stall were observed for 24 h at 4 and 14

The physical size of gestating sows.

Journal of animal science, 2005
Two hundred ninety-six gestating sows were used to determine the physical dimensions of sows in commercial settings. Sows were examined from five farms within a single production model that included identical feed formulation, management practices, herd health, and similar, but not identical, genotypes. Sows were individually weighed, backfat thickness

Mineral precision feeding for gestating sows

2019
Precision feeding strategy (PF), with the individual and daily mixing of two diets with different lysine content (highor low), was previously reported to reduce protein intake and N excretion by 25% compared to a conventional single diet feeding (CF).

Variability in gestating sows’ nutrient requirements

2019
In practice, sows often receive the same diet during the gestation even though their nutrient requirements vary over gestation and among individuals. The objective of this study, realized within the Horizon 2020 EU Feed-a-Gene program (grant agreement n°633531), was to report the variability in nutrient requirements among sows and over time, in order ...
