Membrane Protrusion Coarsening and Nanotubulation within Giant Unilamellar Vesicles

open access: yesJournal of the American Chemical Society, 2011
Hydrophobic side groups on a stimuli-responsive polymer, encapsulated within a single giant unilamellar vesicle, enable membrane attachment during compartment formation at elevated temperatures. We thermally modulated the vesicle through implementation of an IR laser via an optical fiber, enabling localized directed heating.

Vesicle dynamics in elongation flow: Wrinkling instability and bud formation

open access: yes, 2007
We present experimental results on the relaxation dynamics of vesicles subjected to a time-dependent elongation flow. We observed and characterized a new instability, which results in the formation of higher order modes of the vesicle shape (wrinkles ...

Synthesis of Gb3 Glycosphingolipids with Labeled Head Groups: Distribution in Phase‐Separated Giant Unilamellar Vesicles

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, 2019
The receptor lipid Gb3 is responsible for the specific internalization of Shiga toxin (STx) into cells. The head group of Gb3 defines the specificity of STx binding, and the backbone with different fatty acids is expected to influence its localization ...

Isothermal amplification of specific DNA molecules inside giant unilamellar vesicles.

open access: yesChemical Communications, 2019
An isothermal amplification circuit for specific DNA molecules was implemented in giant unilamellar vesicles. Using this circuit, over 5000-fold amplification of output DNAs was achieved, and the amplification behaviour depended on the concentration of ...

Mixed lipid bilayers with locally varying spontaneous curvature and bending

open access: yes, 2014
A model of lipid bilayers made of a mixture of two lipids with different average compositions on both leaflets, is developed. A Landau hamiltonian describing the lipid-lipid interactions on each leaflet, with two lipidic fields $\psi_1$ and $\psi_2$, is ...

Permeability of phospholipid membrane for small polar molecules determined from osmotic swelling of giant phospholipid vesicles

open access: yes, 2012
A method for determining permeability of phospholipid bilayer based on the osmotic swelling of micrometer-sized giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) is presented as an alternative to the two established techniques, dynamic light scattering on liposome ...

Benefits of Combined Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy and Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy for Biomedical Studies Demonstrated by Using a Liposome Model System

open access: yesBiophysica
Drug delivery systems play a pivotal role in targeted pharmaceutical transport and controlled release at specific sites. Liposomes, commonly used as drug carriers, constitute a fundamental part of these systems.

Study of macroscopic and microscopic properties of liposomes produced using microfluidic methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
For the last decades, lipid vesicles or liposomes, vesicles formed by a bilayer of amphiphilic lipids, have been used as a toy model for studying the cell membrane and for applications in cosmetics and drug delivery.
