Gigacycle Fatigue of the Turbocharger Gear Wheel
Inorganic Materials, 2022The goal of the study is to elucidate the reasons for early fracture of the gear wheel teeth of a Cameron TA9000 turbocharger (1820 kW) after an operational load up to 1. 3 x 109 cycles. The chemical composition and the microstracture of the tooth metal were studied using the methods of metallography, microhardness and optical microscopy.

Gigacycle fatigue of bearing steels
Materials Science and Technology, 2012For a practical point of view, the bearing steels are loaded up to the very high cycle fatigue regime, in service, far away from the Wöhler regime. In the present paper, several approaches are discussed in order to open some ways of investigation, in the range of 109 cycles: accelerated fatigue testing, thermal dissipation, fish-eye formation ...

Gigacycle fatigue of ferrous alloys
Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1999The objective of this paper is to determine the very long fatigue life of ferrous alloys up to 1 × 1010 cycles at an ultrasonic frequency of 20 kHz. A good agreement is found with the results from conventional tests at a frequency of 25 Hz by Renault between 105 and 107 cycles for a spheroidal graphite cast iron.

Gigacycle fatigue initiation mechanism in Armco iron [PDF]
Abstract Microstructure irreversibility plays a major role in the gigacycle fatigue crack initiation. Surface Persistent Slip Bands (PSB) formation on Copper and its alloy was well studied by Mughrabi et al. as typical fatigue crack nucleation in the very high cycle fatigue regime.

Gigacycle fatigue of metallic aircraft components
Abstract According to the Paris–Hertzberg crack growth law, an analytical model shows that cracks grow from a flaw very quickly from the short to the long cracks regime, during gigacycle fatigue. The location of the initiation, at the surface or inside, has a small effect.

Gigacycle Fatigue Properties of Wrought Aluminum Alloys
Materials Performance and Characterization, 2023ABSTRACT Fatigue data sheets of the National Institute for Materials Science disclose the results of gigacycle fatigue tests conducted on wrought aluminum alloys. The materials tested were hot-rolled plates and extruded round bars of A5083P-O (two heats), A7075-T6 (three heats), and A6061-T6 (three heats).

Influence of the metallurgical instability on the gigacycle fatigue regime
International Journal of Fatigue, 2010Abstract In this paper several cases of metallurgical instability at high frequency are shown in order to explain what is the limitation of ultrasonic fatigue compared to regular frequency fatigue, for engineering applications. The response of the micro structure around a flaw, that is to say a stress concentration, after a great number of cycles ...

The Impact of the Gigacycle Fatigue on Steel Bridges
Key Engineering Materials, 2013Recent studies have proved that there is no fatigue limit for metallic materials; the stress life curve continuously drops even after 107 cycles. However, existing design codes assume that there is a fatigue limit. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate safety factors if existing codes are used for life evaluations.
