Initiation from Low Cycle Fatigue to Gigacycle Fatigue
Advanced Materials Research, 2014This paper is devoted to the initiation of fatigue crack in Armco iron from low cycle fatigue to gigacycle fatigue. It is shown that the basic mechanisms of initiation are very similar from a physical point of view: PSB and Grain boundary cracking. But the mechanical aspect is specific in LCF and in GCF.

Fatigue strength of carbon fibre composites up to the gigacycle regime (gigacycle-composites)
International Journal of Fatigue, 2006Abstract Knowledge of the fatigue strength is necessary for design purposes also at very high numbers of load cycles. While static properties and fatigue strength curves in the low, medium and high cycle fatigue regime 1 are well investigated, only few data beyond 5×106 cycles (gigacycle fatigue regime) are available.

Gigacycle Fatigue Behavior by Ultrasonic Nanocrystalline Surface Modification
Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2012Nanocrystalline surface layer up to 84 microm in thick is produced on a specimen made of Al6061-T6 alloy by means of surface treatment called ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification (UNSM) technique. The refined grain size is produced in the top-layer and it is increased with increasing depth from the top surface.

Fatigue strength of a single crystal in the gigacycle regime
International Journal of Fatigue, 2007Abstract The objective of this work is to investigate the fatigue behavior of a single crystal nickel-based superalloy in the gigacycle regime. Testing from 10 6 to 10 9 cycles at 593 °C was performed using an ultrasonic fatigue system operating at 20 kHz. Multiple tests were performed at stresses near the fatigue limit to determine the variability

Development of a Gigacycle Bending Fatigue Test Method
55th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2014A vibration-based bending gigacycle testing methodology is introduced as a means to efficiently assess high cycle fatigue (HCF) performance of vibrating turbine engine components. The gigacycle bending test is a modification to a conventional vibration-based approach which was developed to generate bending load conditions similar to those that would ...

Gigacycle Fatigue Properties of Bearing Steels
Journal of ASTM International, 2010Abstract The concept of a fatigue limit at 106 cycles that was introduced by Wohler in 1850 seems nowadays to be the wrong magnitude when considering the fatigue life of modern industrial applications such as automotive engines that run typically billions of cycles.

Analytical Design of Gigacycle Fatigue Specimens for Size Effect Evaluation
Key Engineering Materials, 2013Research activities on gigacycle fatigue properties of materials have recently focused on the influence of specimen size used for ultrasonic fatigue tests. In order to increase the volume of material subjected to the maximum stress (risk volume) a new specimen shape with a Gaussian profile is proposed.

Crack growth in the gigacycle fatigue regime for helicopter gears
Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1999Investigations were performed on helicopters’ gears that had failed in service, using quantitative fractographic analyses. It was shown that a combination of LCF and HCF creates damage in gears on a flight‐by‐flight basis which produces beach marks on the fatigue surface of the gears that correlate one‐to‐one with flight cycles.

Fatigue characteristics of structural steels in the gigacycle region of loading
Materials Today: Proceedings, 2017Abstract The authors of this paper discuss fatigue characteristics of three structural steels, S355 J2, STRENX 700MC and HARDOX 450 obtained in gigacycle region (N ≈ 3.10 5 ÷ N = 10 10 cycles) at high-frequency loading (f ≈ 20 kHz, T = 20 ± 5 °C, R = -1); steels which are used in the construction of vehicles.

Gigacycle Fatigue of the titanium alloy
