Utilization of A Bioluminescent Pattern in the Encircling Gillnet Fisheries

open access: yesReviews in Fisheries Science, 2010
To investigate the relationship between bioluminescent patterns and targeted fish species that cause this pattern, encircling gillnet sampling was conducted in shallow water (< 12 m) on moonless nights between February 2007 and December 2008 in the northern Aegean Sea, Turkey.

Disentangling the causes of protected‐species bycatch in gillnet fisheries [PDF]

open access: yesConservation Biology, 2017
Abstract Gillnet fisheries are widely thought to pose a conservation threat to many populations of marine mammals, seabirds, and turtles. Gillnet fisheries also support a significant proportion of small‐scale fishing communities worldwide. Despite a large number of studies on protected‐species bycatch in recent decades, relatively few

Technical review of encircling ringed gillnet for gillnet standardization in Indonesia

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science
Abstract A technical review of encircling ringed gill nets for gillnet standardization in Indonesia is necessary to determine the design and construction by the waters and their fish target. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics and design of fishing gear, including dimension, shape, and construction.

Hooking efficiencies of SMART drumlines and their possible deployment rates vs gillnets for bather protection

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionFor 87 years, gillnets have been deployed off up to 51 beaches in New South Wales, Australia, to reduce bites on humans by white (Carcharodon carcharias), bull (Carcharhinus leucas), and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier) sharks. Recently, to minimise

On Selectivity Curve of Gillnet

open access: yesNIPPON SUISAN GAKKAISHI, 1971
The preceding paper showed that the mesh selectivity, i.e. relative efficiency, of gillnet was expressed as a function of the ratio of mesh size m to body length l in certain ranges of mesh size and length, and that the application of the above method to McCOMBIE and FRY's, and ISHIDA's data gave different master curves according to the groups of ...

A Scenario Tool for Sustainability Transformation in Fisheries and Beyond

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The urgency to find sustainable management solutions intensifies with increasing natural resource scarcity. Resource sectors are usually characterized by diverse resource users. We developed a structured scenario tool designed to quantitatively assess policy options for achieving sustainability, accounting for ecological, economic and ...

Harnessing Solar Energy to Reduce Sea Turtle Bycatch

open access: yesConservation Letters
Over the past decade, illuminating gillnets with LED lights or chemical lightsticks has emerged as a promising solution to reduce sea turtle bycatch while maintaining target fish catch across multiple ocean basins. However, LED lights require replaceable

Gillnet selectivity to roach, Rutilus rutilus, from the Szczecin Lagoon, Poland [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2007
Background. Roach, Rutilus rutilus, comprise a large proportion of the total catch in the Szczecin Lagoon, and are caught mainly as bycatch in gillnets targeting perch, Perca fluviatilis. The minimum landing length for roach and perch is 17 cm TL and the
