Effects of corn particle size and physical form of the diet on the gastrointestinal structures of broiler chickens

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Poultry Science, 2003
The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different particle sizes, expressed as Geometric Mean Diameter (GMD) of corn (0.336mm, 0.585mm, 0.856mm and 1.12mm) of mash and pelleted broiler chicken diets on the weight of the gizzard,

Metagenomic Profiling of Fecal and Cecal Microbiota and Their Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Indigenous Backyard Poultry

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Indigenous backyard poultry is the predominant type of poultry in developing countries. Rural smallholder farmers in these regions usually adopt the free‐range (backyard) production system, which exposes the poultry to diverse environments and a broad spectrum of microorganisms that influence their diet and gut microbiota.

Effects of Mealworm‐Based Synbiotics on Productive Performance, Egg Quality, Blood Metabolites, and Gut Health in Laying Japanese Quails

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study evaluated synbiotics combining Lactobacillus plantarum or a commercial probiotic (Parsilact) with 1% mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) meal in laying quails. Synbiotic supplementation did not affect feed intake, egg production, or feed efficiency but significantly improved egg quality, increasing egg weight and yolk proportion.

Influence of Feed Form on Gizzard Morphology and Particle Size Spectra of Duodenal Digesta in Broiler Chickens

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2007
We examined gizzard morphology and diet particle size reduction in broiler chickens fed a wheat-based diet that was offered in either a mash or a pelleted form. The pelleted diet had a lower proportion of coarse particles on wet sieving.

Seasonal movements of adult Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum in a Missouri River reservoir

open access: yesJournal of Freshwater Ecology
Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum are important for nutrient cycling and can affect water clarity, plankton densities, and fish production levels. Gizzard Shad can also be crucial prey fish for recreationally important species such as Walleye Sander ...

A twelve-month field study of the West African Thrush Turdus pelios (Passeriformes:Muscicapidae).Part 1:food and feeding ecology

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2004
The feeding ecology of Turdus pelios was studied from field observations and gizzard contents. Quantitative data on feeding were obtained from repeated standard "fixed route "walks and observational points at seven sites from January to December 1998 on ...

Live performance, digestive tract features, and ileal nutrient digestibility in broilers fed diets containing soy hulls

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2020
This study aimed at determining the impact of dietary soy hulls (SH) addition on growth performance, digestive tract attributes, and apparent ileal digestibility of dry matter (DM), nitrogen, and phosphorus (P) in broiler chickens.

Effect of Dietary Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) Extract on Gizzard Erosion and UIceration Induced by Dietary Histamine in Broiler Chicks

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2001
An experiment was conducted to determine if dietary Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) extract prevents gizzard erosion and ulceration of chicks induced by dietary histamine.
