Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Glass transition memorized by the enthalpy-entropy compensation in the shear thinning of supercooled metallic liquids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
To unravel the true nature of glass transition, broader insights into glass forming have been gained by examining the stress-driven glassy systems, where strong shear thinning, i.e. a reduced viscosity under increasing shear rate, is encountered.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of the glass transition [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2006
The principal theme of this paper is that anomalously slow, super-Arrhenius relaxations in glassy materials may be activated processes involving chains of molecular displacements. As pointed out in a preceding paper with A. Lemaitre, the entropy of critically long excitation chains can enable them to grow without bound, thus activating stable thermal ...

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

Mechanical Relaxation-to-Rejuvenation Transition in a Zr-based Bulk Metallic Glass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The relaxation of amorphous materials i.e. aging would largely endanger their performances in service. Here we report a mechanical relaxation-to-rejuvenation transition of a Zr35Ti30Be27.Cu-5(7.5) bulk metallic glass (BMG) in elastostatic compression at ...

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Glass transition and crystallization process of hard magnetic bulk Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 metallic glass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Glass transition and crystallization process of bulk Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 metallic glass were investigated by means of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic ...

A yeast model of 5‐oxoproline accumulation reveals a general toleration to 5‐oxoproline

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a yeast model, we show that even high accumulation of 5‐oxoproline causes only mild cellular stress and does not trigger oxidative stress. Instead, cells adapt by activating efflux pumps and diverse protective pathways, suggesting that previously proposed harmful effects of 5‐oxoproline may arise from indirect metabolic imbalances rather than the

Glass formation in K2SO4-CaO-P2O5 system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The glass forming region in K2SO4-CaO-P2O5 ternary system is identified, the coefficient of thermal expansion, glass transition temperature and refractive index of the synthesised glasses has been determined and the respective contours are plotted in the
