Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Governing teak furniture business : a global value-chain system dynamic modeling approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Indonesian teak forest plantation contributes to more than 35% of world teak forests. Perhutani, a state owned company, manages one million Ha of teak plantation area, while local communities manages teak agro-forests outside the state forest that ...

On the structure of the world economy: An absorbing Markov chain approach

open access: yes, 2020
The expansion of global production networks has raised many important questions about the interdependence among countries and how future changes in the world economy are likely to affect the countries' positioning in global value chains.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Global Value Chains

open access: yes, 2012
<div><div>This book contains seven case studies of global value chains as well as a discussion of the theory behind these chains. Specifically, it examines the impact of global value chains on local upgrading strategies, as well as the role of governments, buyers, donors, and civil society in influencing value chains and the importance of ...

Power in global value chains [PDF]

open access: yesReview of International Political Economy, 2019
Power has been a foundational concept in global value chain (GVC) research. Yet, in most GVC scholarship, power is not explicitly defined and is applied as a unitary concept, rather than as having multiple dimensions. Clarifying the concept of power has become particularly urgent in recent years as GVC research has proliferated beyond dyads of ...

Hierarchicality of Trade Flow Networks Reveals Complexity of Products

open access: yes, 2014
With globalization, countries are more connected than before by trading flows, which currently amount to at least 36 trillion dollars. Interestingly, approximately 30-60 percent of global exports consist of intermediate products.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Organizing the Global Value Chain [PDF]

open access: yesEconometrica, 2013
The authors develop a property-rights model of firm boundaries that permits an analysis of the optimal allocation of ownership rights in a setting where production is sequential in nature and contracts are incomplete. They begin in Section 2 by developing a benchmark model of firm behaviour that isolates the role of the degree of `downstreamness' of a ...

Green Innovation Risk Identification of the Manufacturing Industry under Global Value Chain Based on Grounded Theory

open access: yesSustainability, 2020
Green innovation in the manufacturing industry has been widely recognized. Although green innovation can create economic, social, and ecological value, it is also a high-risk activity.
