Are philosophers responsible for global warming? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Global warming has come about as a result of rapid population increase plus our whole modern way of life, all made possible by modern science. In order to tackle global warming successfully, we need a new kind of inquiry that gives intellectual priority ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Global Warming Reshapes European Pyroregions

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2023
Wildland fire is expected to increase in response to global warming, yet little is known about future changes to fire regimes in Europe. Here, we developed a pyrogeography based on statistical fire models to better understand how global warming reshapes ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Cooling Global Warming Through Transit [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
For generations, cars have been cool because they are perceived to correlate to independence and wealth. People’s attachment to their cars is one of the most cited examples of why government doesn’t want to invest in mass transit.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Assessing the impact of climate and population changes on heatstroke incidence in Saitama City, Japan

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Climate
There is growing concern about heat waves caused by climate change. In Japan, the population is rapidly aging, and protecting older people from heatstroke is attracting public attention.

Absolute validation of SWOT measurements over small reservoirs using legacy photogrammetric DEMs: A case study in Zanjan Province, Iran

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: Four small reservoirs in northwestern Iran varying in size and shape—Taham, Kinevars, Boeen, and Chargar—serve as major drinking and irrigation water sources for semi-arid Zanjan Province.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Global (post) media warming [PDF]

open access: yesKaiak, 2018
The "environmental violence", under the aspect of global warming, seems now the first violence to be faced, alongside those of wars. It has crossed with the progressive erosion of the symbolic orders established in the twentieth century. The intersection
