Molecular aspects of transferrin expression in the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans morsitans) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Insect Physiology, 2007
Iron is an essential element for metabolic processes intrinsic to life, and yet the properties that make iron a necessity also make it potentially deleterious. To avoid harm, iron homeostasis is achieved via proteins involved in transport and storage of iron, one of which is transferrin.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

In silico investigation of glossina morsitans promoters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Philosophiae Doctor - PhDTsetse flies (Glossina spp) are the biological vectors for Trypanosomes, the causative magents of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT).

Two tsetse fly species, Glossina palpalis gambiensis and Glossina morsitans morsitans, carry genetically distinct populations of the secondary symbiont Sodalis glossinidius [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Genetic diversity among Sodalis glossinidius populations was investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. Strains collected from Glossina palpalis gambiensis and Glossina morsitans morsitans flies group into separate clusters, being

Immunogenicity and Serological Cross-Reactivity of Saliva Proteins among Different Tsetse Species. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2015
Tsetse are vectors of pathogenic trypanosomes, agents of human and animal trypanosomiasis in Africa. Components of tsetse saliva (sialome) are introduced into the mammalian host bite site during the blood feeding process and are important for tsetse's ...

Comparative evaluation of the attractiveness of new polyethylene screens versus West African tiny target for the control of tsetse flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The material has no significant difference in captures (non‐shiny cotton‐polyester screens vs. the shiny polyethylene screens), but the vertical screen attracted significantly more G. tachinoides for each type of material. Full white horizontal screen was significantly lower than the reference WATT.

Genome analysis of a Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus reveals a novel, large, double-stranded circular DNA virus

open access: yes, 2008
Several species of tsetse flies can be infected by the Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV). Infection causes salivary gland hypertrophy and also significantly reduces the fecundity of the infected flies. To better understand the

Integrative Genomics Identifies Candidate Genes Underlying Trypanotolerance in Hybrid African Cattle

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Integrative genomics combines data from different omics sources to link genotypes and phenotypes with the aim of unravelling biological networks and pathways that undergird complex traits, particularly with respect to disease. In this respect, integrative genomics, leveraging population and functional genomic data, can be employed to ...
