Repaired Pitch-Cambered Glulam Beams

Full-scale tests were conducted on two radially reinforced Douglas-fir beams. The two beams, each with a span of 30 ft., were tested only to initial failure prior to repairing. The two beams were repaired by radially reinforcing each by a different method. The radial reinforcing was similar to the field repair carried out on beams which fail in service.

Radial Stresses in Curved Glulam Beams

A method for estimating the maximum radial tension and compression stresses in curved glulam beams of rectangular cross section is presented. The recommended precedure is based on a parametric study of beams representing a broad range of the key geometric variables and subject to pure bending and uniformly distributed loading.

Size effect of glulam beams in tension perpendicular to grain

The strength of wood is reduced when the stressed volume is increased. The phenomenon is termed size effect and is often explained as being stochastic in the sense that the probability of weak locations occurring in the wood increases with increased volume.

An optimized 24f glulam beam lay-up has been investigated with a series of laboratory testing and computer modeling. The basic ideas of these assessments are to increase the efficient use of timber resource in the glulam construction with integration of reliability based procedures to characterize the specified strengths for the glulam beams.

Curved and cambered glulam beams

In this second part of the test series, creep and long-term strength of curved and cambered glue- laminated timber beams are studied under cyclically varying humidity conditions. The beams are loaded in such a way that the failure is caused by tension perpendicular-to-grain. A total of 24 beams were loaded under long term loading.
