A high precision falling-ball viscometer using a fast camera [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
This paper describes a simple and inexpensive method of measuring viscosity of a Newtonian fluid using the ball drop technique and an inexpensive point and shoot ~1000 frame per second camera. We successfully measured the viscosity of glycerol and glycerol-water mixture with high precision. We used three different size copper balls of diameters 0.8 mm,

Material Composition Gradient Controls the Autonomous Opening of Banksia Seed Pods in Fire‐Prone Habitats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The seed pod valves of Australian Banksia attenuata plants are not simply bi‐layers which bend when dry. These experiments and models reveal complex mechanics, which allow seed release only after several steps of seed pod opening. Stiffness gradients prevent delamination of the valves during loading, and a shape‐memory function protects the seeds ...

Hydrogenolysis of glycerol

open access: yes, 2010
The purpose of this research was to achieved selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO (1,2-propanediol). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol was investigated in batch and trickle flow fixed bed continuous reactors. Raney catalysts and carbon supported precious catalysts were tested in the batch reactor. Ru/C and oxide-supported catalysts were tested in a

Methanol-Independent Protein Expression by AOX1 Promoter with trans-Acting Elements Engineering and Glucose-Glycerol-Shift Induction in Pichia pastoris

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The alcohol oxidase 1 promoter (PAOX1) of Pichia pastoris is commonly used for high level expression of recombinant proteins. While the safety risk of methanol and tough process control for methanol induction usually cause problems especially in large ...

Print‐and‐Plate Architected Electrodes for Electrochemical Transformations Under Flow

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Typical flow cell electrodes are composed of stochastic porous carbon, limiting understanding of electrode structure‐performance relationships. This work describes an approach, termed “print‐and‐plate,” to prepare porous electrodes by direct ink writing followed by conformal metal coating.

Penggunaan H-Zeolit dan Tawas dalam Pemurnian Crude Glycerol dengan Proses Adsorpsi dan Koagulasi

open access: yesJurnal Kimia Valensi, 2017
Production of biodiesel from used cooking oil byproducts such as crude glycerol with low purity. The crude glycerol containing compounds impurities such as free fatty acids, alcohol, soap, catalyst and water. Compound adsorption of impurities can be done

Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

Selective breeding of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to increase glycerol levels in wine

open access: yesOENO One, 1999
Glycerol in wines is at levels of 1 to 10 g/l and improves their body. To breed wine yeast for increased glycerol production, we crossed yeast isolated from natural fermentations with a commercial strain.

Upgrading the Glycerol from Biodiesel Production as a Source of Energy Carriers and Chemicals—A Technological Review for Three Chemical Pathways

open access: yes, 2017
Glycerol is a by-product of biodiesel obtained from biomass, accounting for 10% of the biodiesel production. In the context of a green economy, aiming for a reduction of the emission of atmospheric greenhouse gases emissions, the demand of biodiesel is ...
