Seasonal variations effect on antioxidant compounds and their role in the adaptation of some halophytes at Wadi Gharandal, Southwest Sinai

open access: yesAnnals of Agricultural Sciences, 2019
The impact of seasonal variations on lipid peroxidation in terms of malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and contents of chlorophyll a and b, carotenoid, ascorbic acid content, proline content, glycine betaine content and total phenols content were assessed in

Chloride dependence of glycine betaine transport in Halobacillus halophilus [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 2001
Growth of Halobacillus halophilus is strictly chloride‐dependent but the physiological basis for the chloride dependence remains to be elucidated. To address the function of Cl− in H. halophilus, a physiological study was performed. It was found that uptake of the compatible solute glycine betaine under isoosmotic conditions was stimulated by ...

Overexpression of BetS, a Sinorhizobium meliloti High-Affinity Betaine Transporter, in Bacteroids from Medicago sativa Nodules Sustains Nitrogen Fixation During Early Salt Stress Adaptation

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2006
Sinorhizobium meliloti possesses several betaine transporters to cope with salt stress, and BetS represents a crucial high-affinity glycine and proline betaine uptake system involved in the rapid acquisition of betaines by cells subjected to osmotic ...

Synthetic microbial communities for engineering climate‐smart biofertilizers

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Global agricultural productivity is increasingly destabilized by climate change—driven droughts, floods, extreme heat, and severe storms. Although the climate‐smart agriculture (CSA) framework addresses these challenges, implementation has focused mainly on plant genetics and agronomic inputs, leaving the adaptive potential of the crop microbiome ...

Genetic Control of Osmoadaptive Glycine Betaine Synthesis in Bacillus subtilis through the Choline-Sensing and Glycine Betaine-Responsive GbsR Repressor [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 2012
Synthesis of the compatible solute glycine betaine confers a considerable degree of osmotic stress tolerance to Bacillus subtilis. This osmoprotectant is produced through the uptake of the precursor choline via the osmotically inducible OpuB and OpuC ABC transporters and a subsequent two-step oxidation process by the GbsB and GbsA enzymes.

Salt‐induced nutritional and metabolic shifts in halophytes: implications for food security

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Plant species vary in their response to salinity: some crops show a degree of salt tolerance, while halophytes – whether wild or cultivated – are characterized by a high capacity to thrive under saline conditions. Halophytes are considered a source of valuable secondary metabolites with potential economic value, yet they might also produce ...

Levels of Glycine Betaine in Growing Cells and Spores of Bacillus Species and Lack of Effect of Glycine Betaine on Dormant Spore Resistance [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 2006
ABSTRACT Bacteria of various Bacillus species are able to grow in media with very high osmotic strength in part due to the accumulation of low-molecular-weight osmolytes such as glycine betaine (GB). Cells of Bacillus species grown in rich and minimal media contained low levels of ...

Is quinoa‐farming sustainable in marginal environments? Social, economical and environmental aspects

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an Andean grain crop introduced as a novel crop to many parts of the world in recent years. Recognized for nutritious seeds and high abiotic stress tolerance, it has been promoted as an element of climate‐resilient agriculture, particularly in marginal environments.

Transverse Relaxation Time Constant of Cystathionine in Human Glioma at 3 T

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Cystathionine (Cth) has emerged as a promising biomarker for identifying 1p/19q codeleted gliomas. However, little is known about the T2 relaxation time constant of Cth in gliomas. The aim of this study was to measure the T2 of Cth in vivo in glioma and compare it to the T2s of other metabolites at 3 T.
