Niflumic Acid Inhibits Goblet Cell Degranulation in a Guinea Pig Asthma Model

open access: yesAllergology International, 2012
Background: Human Ca2+-activated Cl ion channel 1 (hCLCAl) is expressed in goblet cell hyperplasia in the airway of asthmatics, and murine CLCA3 is associated with antigen-sensitized and IL-13-induced goblet cell metaplasia in mice.

The role of mucosal immunity in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most devastating gastrointestinal disease of prematurity. Although the precise cause is not well understood, the main risk factors thought to contribute to NEC include prematurity, formula feeding, and bacterial ...

Elimination of IL-13 Reverses Established Goblet Cell Metaplasia into Ciliated Epithelia in Airway Epithelial Cell Culture

open access: yesAllergology International, 2006
Background: Interleukin (IL)-13 induces goblet cell metaplasia and plays an important role in mucus hypersecretion in asthma. We previously reported that IL-13 induced goblet cell differentiation along with less ciliated cell differentiation in guinea ...

New targets for resolution of airway remodeling in obstructive lung diseases. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Airway remodeling (AR) is a progressive pathological feature of the obstructive lung diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Aldose reductase inhibition prevents metaplasia of airway epithelial cells. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
Goblet cell metaplasia that causes mucus hypersecretion and obstruction in the airway lumen could be life threatening in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Mucosal immune responses following intestinal nematode infection. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In most natural environments, the large majority of mammals harbour parasitic helminths that often live as adults within the intestine for prolonged periods (1-2 years).

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Colon adenocarcinoma diagnosis in human samples by multicontrast nonlinear optical microscopy of hematoxylin and eosin stained histological sections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Combined multimodal nonlinear optical (NLO) microscopies were used to detect and quantify morphological changes associated with stroma and epithelial transformation in colon cancer.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...
