New hairworm (Nematomorpha, Gordiida) species described from the Arizona Madrean Sky Islands [PDF]
Gordiids, or freshwater hairworms, are members of the phylum Nematomorpha that use terrestrial definitive hosts (arthropods) and live as adults in rivers, lakes, or streams. The genus Paragordius consists of 18 species, one of which was described from the Nearctic in 1851. More than 150 years later, we are describing a second Paragordius species from a

Going Solo: Discovery of the First Parthenogenetic Gordiid (Nematomorpha: Gordiida)
Despite the severe fitness costs associated with sexual reproduction, its persistence and pervasiveness among multicellular organisms testifies to its intrinsic, short-term advantages. However, the reproductive assurance hypothesis predicts selection favoring asexual reproduction in sparse populations and when mate finding is difficult. Difficulties in

Chordodes ferox, a new record of horsehair worms (Nematomorpha, Gordiida) from South Africa [PDF]
Three females and one male specimen of a previously unconfirmed species of horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) from South Africa are described using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The females correspond to the description of Chordodes ferox Camerano, 1897, a species previously described from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa) and an ...

Sensitivity of preparasitic stages of Chordodes nobilii (Gordiida, Nematomorpha) to malathion
The largest part of the life cycle of Gordiida, known as horsehair worms, occurs in aquatic environments usually affected by agricultural activities. The free-living adults reproduce in freshwater environments, where preparasitic larvae undergo development. Since malathion is an insecticide used in the distribution area of Chordodes nobilii, the aim of

On the recovery of horsehair worms, Gordius sp. (Nematomorpha: Gordiida) from pork in Shillong, India [PDF]
The members of the phylum Nematomorpha, called as horsehair or gordian worms, are the parasites of arthropods and emerge from their host for reproduction and early development in water. There are about 360 species of nematomorphs described till date. Although, horsehair worms are parasites of arthropod species, sporadic cases of their occurrence have ...

Two questions are of interest concerning the male reproductive system in Gordiida: (1) is the epithelium surrounding the testis continuous or discontinuous and (2) is the type of spermatozoon as described at the transmission electron-microscopical level for the two species of Gordius typical for all Gordiida?

AbstractWe evaluated the effect of carbendazim on non-target organisms using the parasite Chordodes nobilii as a test organism. The Gordiida act as a link between freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems; and C. nobilii, a neotropical representative species of this group, has been shown to be sensitive to other contaminants even at environmentally ...

Revision of the genus Beatogordius (Gordiida, Nematomorpha): II. South american species with description of two new species [PDF]
Seven species of Beatogordius (Nematomorpha) have been reported from South America. A reinvestigation could not reproduce a number of determinations indicated in the literature. B. deshayesi has been a misinterpretation and the status of B. irregularis appears to be very uncertain, because no generic characters could be found.

Scanning electron microscopy of Chordodes moutoni Camerano, 1895 (Gordiida, Nematomorpha)
Taxonomic characters of both male and female horse-hair worms Chordodes moutoni Camerano, 1895 (Nematomorpha) are re-described using scanning electron microscopy. The features are compared with the original description. C. moutoni cuticle has five different areolar types in male while female have six types of areoles.
