Light propagation in graded-index optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1978
An accurate numerical method is described for solving the Helmholtz equation for a general class of optical fibers. The method yields detailed information about the spatial and angular properties of the propagating beam as well as the modal propagation constants for the fiber.

Pulse broadening in graded-index optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1976
This paper reports on some theoretical and experimental investigations of the radial refractive index gradient that maximizes the information-carrying capacity of a multimode optical waveguide. The primary difference between this work and previous studies is that the dispersive nature of core and cladding materials is taken into consideration.

Leaky modes in graded index optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1976
Leaky mode attenuation coefficients for graded index optical fibers are derived using the WKB approximation. For the case of a parabolic index profile, the attenuation coefficients for explicitly evaluated and used to calculate the leaky mode contribution to near field and attenuation measurements.

Mode Coupling Effects in Graded-Index Optical Fibers

Applied Optics, 1975
Mode coupling theory is applied to the study of multimode optical fibers with graded-index cores. For coupling caused by random bends in the waveguide axis, the results predict the dependence of the induced losses on the fiber's characteristics. The impulse response is determined for fibers with random bends having several different power spectra.

Selective mode excitation of graded index optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1978
A method is described permitting excitation of a small number of modes in graded index fibers, the order of the launched mode being easily varied and determined. Using this launching technique, it is possible to determine the index profile and index difference of graded core fibers; results are compared with those obtained by other techniques.

Frequency characteristics of graded-index fibers

Applied Optics, 1980
Frequency response of graded-index multimode fibers, whose index profile parameter alpha deviates from the optimum value, is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The frequency response of the fiber with optimum alpha diverges periodically.

Refracting leaky rays in graded-index fibers

Applied Optics, 1978
A local plane wave analysis is employed to derive the ray power transmission and attenuation coefficients for refracting leaky rays on graded-index fibers. These coefficients also reduce to established forms for tunneling rays and are compared with modal attenuation coefficients in the limit of strongly refracting rays.
