Graded-index characteristics in single-crystal fibers
Optics Letters, 1998Single-crystal fibers of Ti(3+):Al(2)O (3)have been grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique and shown to exhibit radial refractive-index gradients. A refractive-index increase of approximately 12% in the fiber core with respect to the fiber sidewalls has been measured. The index profile can be fitted with a parabolic model.

Transmission characteristics of graded-index fibers
Fiber and Integrated Optics, 1979Abstract The use of graded-index fibers for optical communication systems is now under consideration for numerous civil and military applications, and in these either LED or laser sources can be developed. The bandwidth of the system depends on the source linewidth, the dispersion of refractive index in the fiber, the strength of excitation of the ...

Aberrations in curved graded-index fibers
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1979Graded-index fibers can be efficiently used as image relays and therefore it is necessary to study the aberrations in the images transmitted through these media. Since curvature in fibers is inevitable, aberrations in curved graded-index fibers are also important.

Optical loss measurement in graded-index fiber using a dummy fiber
Applied Optics, 1979The utility of an auxiliary fiber, called a dummy fiber, is investigated for optical fiber loss measurements. The dummy fiber is spliced and used to excite the test fiber. Excess loss caused by undesirable modes is found to be reduced to less than 0.05 dB by using a 500-m dummy fiber and choosing the test fiber cut length to be 2 m for reference.

Wavelength dependence of spliced graded-index multimode fibers
Applied Optics, 1979Profile dispersion affects the bandwidth of graded-index multimode fibers. In this paper, two graded-index multimode fibers of nearly 2-km length, of different index profile, and the combined fiber obtained by splicing them are examined by the swept-frequency method. It was confirmed that the spliced fiber also has a wavelength-dependent characteristic,

Graded index porous optical fibers – dispersion management in terahertz range
A graded index porous optical fiber incorporating an air-hole array featuring variable air-hole diameters and inter-hole separations is proposed, fabricated, and characterized in a view of the fiber potential applications in low-loss, low-dispersion ...

Modal dispersion in multimode graded-index fibers
Applied Optics, 1975A complete analysis of the propagation characteristics of a ray through an axially symmetric graded-index medium is carried out in the geometrical optics approximation. First, two constants of the motion are shown to exist for a ray propagating in an infinite medium.

Reflection properties of splices in graded-index optical fibers
Applied Optics, 1983The reflection properties of splices, such as fusion splices and V-groove splices, in graded-index multimode optical fibers were investigated theoretically and experimentally. Equations have been derived for calculating reflection in fusion splices and V-groove splices.

Mode coupling effects in a graded-index fiber cable
Applied Optics, 1981Mode coupling coefficients and impulse response in graded-index fibers are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Mode coupling coefficient measurements at lambda = 1.27 microm are made for fibers before and after cabling. The magnitude variation of the mode coupling coefficients due to cabling is found to be relatively small, and the ...

Differential mode attenuation measurements in graded-index fibers
Applied Optics, 1978An automated apparatus is described for measuring mode-dependent scattering and total attenuation in graded-index waveguides. Measurements are reported for two low-loss waveguides and several high-loss waveguides. The results illustrate the ability of this technique to identify different types of loss mechanisms.
