Measurements of mode conversion coefficients in graded-index fibers

Applied Optics, 1980
A new method of measuring mode conversion coefficients in multimode fibers is proposed. The principle is based on the phenomenon that modal power propagating along a fiber undergoes a gradual change due to mode coupling and mode-dependent losses. Application of the principle has made it possible to measure mode conversion coefficients of a graded-index

Graded-index silver chlorobromide fibers for the mid-infrared

Applied Optics, 2005
We have developed and characterized graded-index optical fibers for the mid-IR spectral range, based on silver chlorobromide (AgClBr) crystals. A preform was fabricated by inserting a cylindrical rod made of AgCl(0.1)Br(0.9) into a tube made of AgCl(0.9)Br(0.1). The preform was heated in an oven, causing diffusion of Cl into the outer layer of the rod,

Profile inhomogeneity in multimode graded-index fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1989
Profile parameters (g) of several multimode graded-index fibers have been measured. It was found that g may vary azimuthally by +or-0.15 or more in fibers for which the average value is between 1.8 and 2.2. >

Modified graded-index fibers for chemical sensing

SPIE Proceedings, 1999
Multimode optical fibers with inverted parabolic refractive- index profiles (IGI fibers) have been shown promising for the fabrication of sensing modules for evanescent-wave chemical detection. Besides IGI fibers with parabolic index profiles, this paper deals with theoretical and experimental investigation of some other types of IGI fibers ...

Mode excitation in graded-index optical fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1984
We report on theoretical and experimental investigations of the excitation of graded-index fiber modes by a laser beam. The far-field irradiance distribution and the focusing qualities are measured and are related to the measured refractive-index profiles of some commercially available graded-index fibers.

Analysis and evaluation of graded-index fiber lenses

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1987
The problem of transverse and axial misalignment sensitivity associated with the coupling of single-mode fibers is often addressed by using an expanded beam technique. This technique improves the coupling tolerances for relative displacements of the expanded beams. The success of this scheme relies on the integrity of the bond between the fiber and the

Transmission characteristics of splices in graded-index multimode fibers

Applied Optics, 1981
Losses and baseband bandwidth changes caused by a splice in a graded-index multimode fiber have been studied theoretically. Splices are classified into three categories, and their influence on mode conversion coefficients and baseband frequency response has been investigated. Transmission characteristics for splices in cascade are also investigated.

Optimum design of graded-index fiber structure

Optical Fiber Communication, 1979
It is generally accepted that graded-index fiber will soon be in practical use for medium- to large-capacity trunk lines. However, the procedure for fiber structural design is not fully established. Fiber parameters should be determined considering the synthetic requirement for transmission characteristics, mechanical properties, installation and ...

Fiber coupling using graded-index rod lenses

Applied Optics, 1980
The graded-index rod lens (GRIN lens) is useful in coupling between multimode optical fibers. Applications include connectors, switches, multiplexers, and branch couplers. In these devices, one GRIN lens collimates light from an input fiber, and a second lens collects the light and focuses it on an output fiber.

Propagating Fields in Graded Index Optical Fibers

1979
Solution of the wave equation for light propagation in an optical fiber yields detailed information on power losses, angular and spatial sizes of transmitted light and modal propagation constants.
