Comparing regularisation paths of (conjugate) gradient estimators in ridge regression [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
We consider standard gradient descent, gradient flow and conjugate gradients as iterative algorithms for minimizing a penalized ridge criterion in linear regression. While it is well known that conjugate gradients exhibit fast numerical convergence, the statistical properties of their iterates are more difficult to assess due to inherent nonlinearities

Nonlinear Thermophoresis beyond Local Equilibrium Criterion [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
Thermophoresis (thermodiffusion, Soret effect) moves molecules along thermal gradients. We measure its phenomenological linear drift relation by single particle tracking in convection-free settings. For moderate thermal gradients, drift velocity depends linearly on the gradient.

Policy Gradient Methods for Reinforcement Learning with Function Approximation and Action-Dependent Baselines [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We show how an action-dependent baseline can be used by the policy gradient theorem using function approximation, originally presented with action-independent baselines by (Sutton et al. 2000).

Existence of solutions to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problems with dependence on the gradient

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2018
The goal of this article is to explore the existence of positive solutions for a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by a nonhomogeneous partial differential operator with Dirichlet boundary condition.

A biharmonic elliptic problem with dependence on the gradient and the Laplacian

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2009
We study the existence of solutions for nonlinear biharmonic equations that depend on the gradient and the Laplacian, under Navier boundary condition.

Experimental Study of Alfvén Wave Reflection from an Alfvén-speed Gradient Relevant to the Solar Coronal Holes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We report the first experimental detection of a reflected Alfvén wave from an Alfvén-speed gradient under conditions similar to those in coronal holes. The experiments were conducted in the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Non-linear filtration models and the effect of nonlinearity parameters on flow rates in low-permeability reservoirs

open access: yesGeoresursy
Filtration of oil in low-permeable reservoirs is considered. The experimental data of dependence of filtration velocity on pressure gradient are analysed.
