Scale-Dependent Definitions of Gradient and Aspect and their Computation [PDF]
In order to compute lines of constant gradient and areas of constant aspect on a terrain, we introduce the notion of scale dependent local gradient and aspect for a neighborhood around each point of a terrain. We present three definitions for local gradient and aspect, and give efficient algorithms to compute them.

Strain-gradient elasticity and gradient-dependent plasticity with hierarchical refinement of NURBS [PDF]
Higher-order strain-gradient models are relevant for engineering materials which exhibit size-dependent behaviour as observed from experiments. Typically, this class of models incorporate a length scale - related to micro-mechanical material properties - to capture size effects, remove stress singularities, or regularise an ill-posed boundary value ...

Knowing how proteases recognise preferred substrates facilitates matching proteases to applications. The S1′ pocket of protease EA1 directs cleavage to the N‐terminal side of hydrophobic residues, particularly leucine. The S1′ pocket of thermolysin differs from EA's at only one position (leucine in place of phenylalanine), which decreases cleavage ...

Complicated dynamics of parabolic equations with simple gradient dependence [PDF]
Summary: Let \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2\) be a smooth bounded domain. Given positive integers \(n,k\) and \(q_l\leq l\), \(l=1,\dots,k\), consider the semilinear parabolic equation \[ u_{t}= u_{xx}+ u_{yy}+ a(x,y)u+ \sum_{l=1}^k a_l(x,y) u^{l-q_{l}} (u_{y})^{q_{l}}, \quad t>0,\;(x,y)\in \Omega,\tag{E} \] \[ u=0, \qquad t>0,\;(x,y)\in \partial \Omega. \

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

Atomistic simulations of plasticity heterogeneity in gradient nano-grained FCC metals
Gradient nano-grained (GNG) metals are an emerging class of heterogeneous structured materials with extraordinary mechanistic performances and unnatural plasticity mechanisms, which are unachievable in traditional homogeneous nanocrystalline metals. Here,

Limit theorems for gradient-dependent elastoplastic geomaterials
AbstractIn this paper, the limit theorems proposed by Drucker and co-workers are reformulated to address a class of gradient-dependent elastoplastic geomaterials. The gradient effects are accounted for by incorporating strain gradients and their conjugate higher-order stresses into the constitutive descriptions. Gradient-dependent equilibrium equations

C‐mannosylation is a unique form of protein glycosylation. In this study, we demonstrated that ADAMTS1 is C‐mannosylated at Trp562 and Trp565 in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells. We found that C‐mannosylation of ADAMTS1 is essential for its secretion, processing, enzymatic activity, and ability to promote vasculogenic mimicry. These findings

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease affecting motor neurons. Individuals with SMA experience mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an antioxidant and neuroprotective substance, ergothioneine (ERGO), on an SMNΔ7 mouse model of SMA.

Proton Gradients and Proton-Dependent Transport Processes in the Chloroplast [PDF]
Proton gradients are fundamental to chloroplast function. Across thylakoid membranes, the light induced -proton gradient is essential for ATP synthesis. As a result of proton pumping into the thylakoid lumen, an alkaline stromal pH develops, which is required for full activation of pH-dependent Calvin Benson cycle enzymes.
