Methane-cycling microorganisms in soils of a high-alpine altitudinal gradient [PDF]
Methanogens and methanotrophs play unique roles as producers and consumers of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) in soils, respectively. Here, we aimed to reveal whether and to which extent methane-cyclers occur in high-alpine soils, and to assess their spatial distribution along an altitudinal gradient (2700-3500 m) in the Austrian Alps at sites located

Análisis de la concentración de carbono y composición vegetal en humedales de páramo altoandinos en una gradiente altitudinal en el Parque Nacional Cayambe Coca [PDF]
Andean paramos are tropical ecosystems whose topographic and climatological patterns allow the formation of peatlands, which are flooded or semi-flooded areas that accumulate large layers of organic soil called peat.

Freezing tolerance in grasses along an altitudinal gradient in the Venezuelan Andes [PDF]
The tropical high Andes experience greater daily temperature oscillations compared to seasonal ones as well as a high frequency of night frost occurrence year round. Survival of organisms, under such environmental conditions, has been determined by selective forces which have evolved into adaptations including avoidance or tolerance to freezing.

Along with precipitation, forest cover emerges as a fundamental driver of alpha and beta diversity in the seed rain. This highlights the role of habitat amount at the landscape level over patch‐level features, like patch size, for seed dispersal. However, increased seed density can be related to higher dispersal rates in forest borders.

A multi‐network approach to assess how physical templates shape stream fish ecological strategies
This multi‐network framework identifies a continuous topological gradient of fish ecological strategies—comprising Dispersal Gateways, Integrated Connectors, and Mass Effect Dominated species—within the dendritic river template. The functional role of stream reaches is scale‐sensitive, particularly at headwater extremes where sites operate as critical ...

Spatial trends of Potamogetonaceae along an altitudinal gradient
Studying the effect of altitude on species distribution may help us to predict the response of species to future climate changes, which will likely cause upward migration of vegetation zones. In this study, we aimed to analyze distribution and abundance patterns of Potamogetonaceae along an altitudinal gradient and to determine the species ...
