The Role of Σ9 Boundaries in Grain Boundary Engineering
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2010In a grain-boundary-engineered (GBE) microstructure, Σ9 boundaries are the second most abundant boundary type. This article presents data showing that, in GBE copper, most Σ9s were special. Σ9 boundaries are also a geometrically necessary component of a GBE microstructure.

The diffusion processes involved in the accommodation of grain boundary sliding in diffusional deformation are revisited by considering the role of grain boundary curvature and of the associated grain boundary migration. A method is developed for calculating grain boundary profiles, diffusional fluxes, and the dissipation power arising from the ...

Bridging grain boundary volume to segregation at symmetric grain boundaries
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2007Abstract Symmetric 〈1 1 0〉 type Al grain boundaries are experimentally and theoretically investigated. It is demonstrated that Ga segregation can be understood by incorporating the anisotropy of the relaxed grain boundary volumes. The feasibility of Ga film formation has been illustrated by applying a continuum model.

Boundary conditions at grain boundaries
Journal of Applied Physics, 1983Grain boundaries in polycrystalline semiconductor material are frequently idealized as surfaces possessing a characteristic surface recombination velocity. Minority carrier densities generated by external sources (electron beams, light, etc.) in polycrystalline p–n junctions must satisfy certain boundary conditions at these grain boundaries which will ...

The differential geometry of grain boundaries: tilt boundaries
Acta Crystallographica Section A, 1976The dislocation structure of a pure twist boundary is analyzed utilizing the techniques of differential geometry. Such basic tensor quantities as the metric, strain, dislocation density, Burgers vector, and distortion are all defined with respect to such boundaries and related to each of the individual grains comprising the boundary as well as to a ...

We present a detailed analysis of the universal relationship between grain boundary (GB) free energy and GB self-diffusion coefficient derived by Borisov et al. (1964). This relationship was expressed by a simple equation that was used in many publications to predict GB energies on the basis of experimental diffusion data.
