Grain Size Estimation in Anisotropic Materials [PDF]

open access: possibleMaterials Science Forum, 2005
The estimation of grain size (volume) by using computer database of tessellations is explained and demonstrated. As model material was selected an anisotropic material formed by compression-moulded pellets of PVC. The pellets were first covered with carbon paste to highlight borders of grains in final specimen and then moulded; their volumes were ...

Grain‐Size Determinations

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1981
This study compares the grain sizes of dense, equiaxed gadolinia (Gd2O3) specimens as determined by light microscope/polished surface and by scanning electron microscope/fracture surface techniques. The average intercept lengths (AIL) as determined by the two techniques were found to differ only slightly.

Control of grain size in rice

Plant Reproduction, 2018
Summary of rice grain size. Rice is one of the most important crops in the world. Increasing rice yield has been an urgent need to support the rapid growth of global population. The size of grains is one of major components determining rice yield; thus, grain size has been an essential target during rice breeding.

Effect of grain size on cluster size

Journal of Applied Physics, 2005
A cluster size of a perpendicular medium was calculated from the correlation between grains in M-H loops. The cluster size was affected by physical properties as follows. When grain size is small and exchange stiffness constant A is not zero, the cluster size increases with decreasing grain-size.

Grain Boundary Reconstruction for Grain Sizing

1991
Measuring ASTM grain size by automatic image analysis is often made difficult by the inability of the image analyzer to detect grain boundaries accurately. For this reason, a logic-based method for grain boundary reconstruction has been developed. ASTM G was measured at various grain sizes both before and after image processing.

Effect of the initial grain size on the final grain size of materials of bellows

Metal Science and Heat Treatment, 1985
The final grain size of the material of measuring bellows is determined by the conditions of mechanical and heat treatment, and it depends little on the initial grain size; this makes it possible to eliminate acceptance control of the grain size of material for bellows in the state as supplied.

Grain Size Distributions in Normal Grain Growth

Practical Metallography, 2010
Abstract An analytical distribution function characterising the grain sizes of polycrystalline microstructures is presented. Contrary to standard mathematical probability functions that are still often used for description of experimentally obtained size distributions, this one is based on a statistical mean-field theory of grain growth ...

Grain boundary grooving at finite grain size

Scripta Metallurgica, 1988
Summary Simple analytical solutions have been obtained for the linearized partial differential equations which describe grain boundary grooving by evaporation or by surface diffusion in finite systems. It is found that the groove profile shape predicted by infinite geometry solutions is closely approximated in the early.

On the relation between grain size and grain topology

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1985
Experimental studies of the topology of grains in polycrystals have indicated that the topological complexity of a grain is related to its diameter, as opposed to its surface area or volume. This paper presents additional experimental documentation of this correlation and a theoretical derivation of the empirically observed relationship.

Plasticity and Grain Boundary Diffusion at Small Grain Sizes

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2010
AbstractBulk nanostructured—or ultrafine‐grained materials are often fabricated by severe plastic deformation to break down the grain size by dislocation accumulation. Underlying the often spectacular property enhancement that forms the basis for a wide range of potential applications is a modification of the volume fraction of the grain boundaries ...
