Abstract The fundamental insight is grammation, a change from lexical to grammatical content via reanalysis of a lexical item to be merged in a functional projection. Feature change and preference principles provide the necessary motivation. Reduction processes are separate from grammation.

In this monograph, various aspects of the morphosyntactic evolution of the Romance languages are shown to interact in a theory of grammaticalization. The study argues for the incorporation and subordination of inflectional morphology within a grammaticalization continuum, constituting but a portion of the latter.
