This chapter discusses how granite is the geologic backbone of the Sierra Nevada. The discovery of photosynthesis by primitive microorganisms had consequences: it transformed Earth's early atmosphere into an oxygenated, caustic pall that could weather rocks into dust with unprecedented efficiency. Dust is where granite begins.
