Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Solution‐Processed Mn‐Doped 2d Perovskite Wavelength Shifters for Noble‐Liquid Photon Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed Mn2+‐doped PEA2PbBr4 two‐dimensional perovskite films are demonstrated as large‐area wavelength shifters for noble‐liquid photon detectors. Mn2+ incorporation introduces a broad emission band at ∼620 nm with a large Stokes shift, suppressing self‐absorption and matching SiPM sensitivity.

MODELING OF GRANULAR AND CELLULAR MATERIALS

Transactions of the ASAE, 2001
Two different approaches for modeling of granular and cellular materials are presented. The first shows a packing procedure for the reconstruction and quantification of loose, granular media. The reconstruction takes into account the grain size distribution and the porosity of the investigated medium.

Compression of anisometric granular materials

Powder Technology, 2019
Abstract Granular particles of anisometric shape are common in many technologies and the knowledge of their compression response is needed for their handling, storage, transport and flow. Despite its importance, a little attention has been paid to this problem so far.

A Variational Principle for Granular Materials

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1976
AbstractA variational principle for the continuum theory of granular materials is presented. This principle is used to obtain the basic equations of the equilibrium theory and the boundary conditions for both the incompressible granule case, and the compressible granule case.

Imaging of avalanches in granular materials

Physical Review Letters, 1992
Dry, noncohesive granular materials were very slowly driven to the threshold of instability where they produced avalanches. We have used digital image analysis to record avalanches that occurred on the surface of the incline. Results show large slides every 10\char21{}13 min which reset the surface from the maximum angle of stability, ${\mathrm ...

Averaging method of granular materials

Physical Review E, 2002
This paper presents an averaging method to link discrete to continuum variables of granular materials. Compared to the other methods proposed in the literature, it has advantages of being applicable to all flow regimes, and to granular flows with or without the effect of physical boundaries.

BEYOND FAILURE IN GRANULAR MATERIALS

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1997
The interrelations among different constitutive models of granular materials are discussed with special reference to failure and stability. For the hyperplastic constitutive equation, the accessible stress states and the stable stress states are found to be enclosed by a bound surface and a stability surface in the stress space, respectively ...
