Elastoplastic Waves in Granular Materials
Journal of Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics, 2003For a description of the deformation of materials with different resistances to tension and compression, the conventional rheological diagram is supplemented by a new element --- rigid contact. It is used to construct a model of an ideal granular material possessing elastic and plastic properties.

Micromechanical Modeling of Granular Materials
2002We briefly review attempts to predict the mechanical response of granular materials based on a simple characterization of the interparticle force and the statistical geometry of their packing and interactions. The results of two such theories are presented.

Some Features of the Flow of Granular Materials and Aerated Granular Materials
Journal of Rheology, 1986Mechanisms contributing to stresses in flowing granular materials are reviewed, with an indication of the present state of constitutive theories of both frictional and collisional stress contributions. The application of equations of motion based on these models to problems is then illustrated by three examples: plane shearing, hopper discharge, and ...

Axial segregation of granular materials
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 1999When mixtures of granular materials are rotated, it is often found that they segregate into bands, along the axis of rotation, which are rich in the various components. This effect is discussed experimentally and theoretically, with emphasis on a mechanism based on surface flow.

Drag forces in granular materials
Soft MatterThis tutorial review introduces some non-trivial properties of the drag force experienced by objects moving through granular materials, including dependencies on the velocity of the object and the pressure around it, and associated scaling laws.

NONLINEAR ELASTICITY AND THERMODYNAMICS OF GRANULAR MATERIALS
Advances in Complex Systems, 2001The elastic properties of granular materials can be enormously nonlinear as compared with the properties of non-porous materials. Experiments on isotropic compression of a granular assembly of spheres show that the shear μ, and bulk k, moduli vary with the confining pressure faster than the 1/3 power law predicted by Hertz–Mindlin elasticity theory ...
