COMPLEX FLOW IN GRANULAR MEDIA [PDF]
By detailed Molecular Dynamics we investigate the rheology of granular suspensions driven through a fixed plate channel by a pressure gradient in the suspending fluid. We observe various possible flow states: disordered flow, ordered flow (granular crystallization) and jammed as well as make close connections to experimental results in colloidal ...

Fluctuations in granular media
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 1999Dense slowly evolving or static granular materials exhibit strong force fluctuations even though the spatial disorder of the grains is relatively weak. Typically, forces are carried preferentially along a network of “force chains.” These consist of linearly aligned grains with larger-than-average force. A growing body of work has explored the nature of

GRANULAR MEDIA AS A PHYSICS PROBLEM [PDF]
Although there is a vast engineering literature for granular materials, as a subject for physicists it has seen great growth in recent years. This is because, when stripped down to the fundamental problem, it is quite novel, and demands a rethink of the kind of laws familiar elsewhere in physics.

Nonlinear Elasticity of Granular Media
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1997The finite and incremental elasticity of a random packing of identical spheres is derived using energy methods. We consider different models for the contact forces between spheres, all of which are based upon or related to the fundamental Hertz theory; we consider only the special cases of perfect friction (no tangential slip) or no tangential friction.

Sand, rice, sugar, snow, cement... Although ubiquitous in our daily lives, granular media still challenge engineers and fascinate researchers. This book provides the state-of-the-art of the physics of granular media and recent advances in the field. The book presents the fundamental properties of granular materials: interactions between grains; solid ...

Magnus effect in granular media
Physical Review E, 2019A spinning ball moving through air experiences a net lift due to the "Magnus effect" resulting from the pressure difference across its two sides. In this work, with the help of numerical simulations, we present a similar phenomenon on a circular intruder undergoing both translational and rotational motion in a two-dimensional granular medium.
