Jamming in Dense Granular Media
2006We review some recent results on Statistical Mechanics approach to dense granular media. In particular, by analytical mean field investigation we derive the phase diagram of a monodisperse system. We show that "jamming" corresponds to a phase transition from a "fluid" to a "glassy" phase.

Friction measurements in granular media
Physical Review E, 2004We present some experimental results, estimating the lateral stress response to a longitudinal stress applied to an ideal granular system as a function of friction parameters. Structural effects are taken into account through the use of an angle of contact distribution.

Optimize Granular Media Filtration
Opflow, 2023Effective filtration depends on a combination of complex physical and chemical mechanisms. It's important for operators to know how granular media filters work, the basics of how they are designed, and strategies for successful operation.

A discrete reduced distance method to generate 2-D and 3-D granular porous media is presented. The main property of the method is to produce heterogeneous and/or anisotropic packed beds of joined grains with arbitrary shapes and optimum fitting (i.e., minimum porosity).

Abstract This review is concerned with the physics of dry granular media which is the focus of many recent studies. One reason for this interest is not only due to its practical importance but also, because it is currently seen as a fundamental model with a rather broad range of applicability.

Abstract Ever since Darcy’s (1) basic work on the mechanics of filtration, flow through porous media has been the object of repeated research. Numerous and most valuable data on filtration coefficients have been gathered (2), the approach in recent years having been broadened by invoking the principle of dynamic similitude (3).

Abstract The flow of granular material, like sand, presents many intriguing effects in particular when it is shaken, poured or sheared. Here, the granular medium is modelled by a packing of elastic spheres and simulated via molecular dynamics. Dissipation of energy and shear friction at collisions are included.

Abstract : For a number of years, there has been under development a mathematical theory of the mechanical behavior of materials composed of discrete elastic grains in direct contact. Eventually, the theory is intended to predict stress-strain relations, stress distributions, vibrations, wave propagation phenomena and criteria of failure for such ...

Due to the lack of a general continuum theory the main theoretical approach to investigate granular flow has been computer simulation. As an alternative to molecular dynamics and in analogy with hydrodynamics recent lattice gas models have been used to model flow in granular media. We present the details and the discussion of one such automaton.
