NezhNPV, a new biocontrol agent for Nesodiprion zhejiangensis Zhou & Xiao (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), an emerging forest pest. [PDF]

open access: yesPest Manag Sci
Here, a naturally occurring baculovirus and a new biocontrol agent, NezhNPV, which infects a multivoltine forest pest, Nesodiprion zhejiangenis, was characterized by field efficacy trial, electron microscopy and genome sequencing. Abstract BACKGROUND Nesodiprion zhejiangensis, a multivoltine sawfly, is widely distributed in south China and has caused ...

Review of the existing maximum residue levels for dithiocarbamates according to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 21, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Abstract According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the group of pesticide active substances dithiocarbamates. To assess the occurrence of metiram, ziram, maneb and mancozeb residues in plants, processed commodities, rotational crops and ...

Few indirect effects of baculovirus on parasitoids demonstrate high compatibility of biocontrol methods against Tuta absoluta

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 79, Issue 4, Page 1431-1441, April 2023., 2023
Baculoviruses are used for pest control in agroecosystems, where parasitoids are present. We assessed whether parasitoids discriminate against virus‐infected hosts and examined the effect of the virus on parasitoid offspring. We found few indirect effects of the virus on the parasitoids, indicating that both agents can be combined.

The 2021 European Union report on pesticide residues in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 21, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Under European Union legislation (Article 32, Regulation (EC) No 396/2005), EFSA is to provide an annual report assessing the pesticide residue levels in foods on the European market. In 2021, 96.1% of the overall 87,863 samples analysed fell below the maximum residue level (MRL), 3.9% exceeded this level, of which 2.5% were non‐compliant, i.e.

Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecological Specialization of Baculoviruses: A Treasure Trove for Future Applied Research

open access: yesViruses, 2018
The Baculoviridae, a family of insect-specific large DNA viruses, is widely used in both biotechnology and biological control. Its applied value stems from millions of years of evolution influenced by interactions with their hosts and the environment. To

Microbial antibiotics take the lead in the fight against plant pathogens

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 28-33, January 2023., 2023
The potential of plant microbiome for the development of novel biopesticides for the integrated pest management of agricultural crops. Abstract The plant microbiome is essential for plant fitness and health. Antibiotics produced by plant‐associated bacteria have been shown to play an important role in protecting plant hosts against phytopathogens. Here,

Granulovirus PK-1 kinase activity relies on a side-to-side dimerization mode centered on the regulatory αC helix

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
The viral Protein Kinase-1 (PK-1) phosphorylates the regulatory protein p6.9, which facilitates baculoviral genome release. Here, the authors combine X-ray crystallography with biophysical and biochemical analyses as well as molecular dynamics ...
