Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Age and Huddling as Determinants of Metabolic Rate in Grasshopper Mice (Onychomys leucogaster) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
The metabolic rates of grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) were determined every third day from birth to adulthood. Metabolic rates were quantitated by measuring oxygen consumption in an open circuit system.

Timescale-invariant representation of acoustic communication signals by a bursting neuron [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Acoustic communication often involves complex sound motifs in which the relative durations of individual elements, but not their absolute durations, convey meaning.

Optimal Power Flow Solution With an Embedded Center-Node Unified Power Flow Controller Using an Adaptive Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
This paper proposes an adaptive grasshopper optimization algorithm (AGOA) for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem with the optimal incorporation of a center-node unified power flow controller (C-UPFC). The C-UPFC which is an advanced flexible AC

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.

Granular Bait Applications for Management of Rangeland Grasshoppers Using a Remotely Piloted Aerial Application System

open access: yesDrones
Rangeland grasshoppers are an endemic species that play an essential role in the rangeland ecosystem but can cause severe economic damage when populations reach outbreak levels.

Tyrosine kinase inhibition produces specific alterations in axon guidance in the grasshopper embryo [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Tyrosine kinase signaling pathways are essential for process outgrowth and guidance during nervous system development. We have examined the roles of tyrosine kinase activity in programming growth cone guidance decisions in an intact nervous system in ...

Levels of genetic polymorphism: marker loci versus quantitative traits [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Species are the units used to measure ecological diversity and alleles are the units of genetic diversity. Genetic variation within and among species has been documented most extensively using allozyme electrophoresis.

Enhancing the Ultrasonic Welding of Wood Using 3D Printed Lignin Energy Directors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sustainable manufacturing for lightweight structures using ecofriendly materials will be key to reducing material consumption and lowering carbon footprints. Here, an approach is presented to weld wood using ultrasonic vibrations with material at the joint interface to direct energy.

Integrating species distribution models, genetics and morphology to infer species dynamics of New Zealand Phaulacridium grasshoppers : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Species comparison studies have used a number of different methods that can contribute to our understanding of processes that influence the differences and similarities observed between species.
