A Comparative Study of Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Control Schemes in Power Electronic-Based Power Systems

open access: yesPower Electronics and Drives, 2023
Along with de-carbonisation, the penetration of power electronic converters has increased, and the power system has become a power electronic-based power system. In such a situation, the stability of the power system faces great challenges.

Unified Grid-Forming/Following Inverter Control

open access: yesIEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, 2022
The paper describes an inverter control scheme which incorporates both a phase-locked loop (PLL) for voltage synchronization and power-frequency droop for load sharing.

A Unified Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Primary Control Design With Optimized Enforcement of Grid Operational Constraints

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
A novel, unified control design is proposed for software-defined inverters (SDIs) to operate in either grid-forming (GFM) or grid-following (GFL) mode in AC grids/microgrids and to switch between the two modes seamlessly.

Control of Grid-Following Inverters Under Unbalanced Grid Conditions

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 2020
This paper proposes a new control scheme to eliminate the 3rd harmonic in the output currents of grid-following inverters under unbalanced grid conditions. Unbalanced grids adversely affect the performance of grid-following inverters due to the oscillations appearing on the DC-link voltage with a frequency twice the line frequency.

Grid-Forming Converters: Control Approaches, Grid-Synchronization, and Future Trends—A Review

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Industry Applications, 2021
In the last decade, the concept of grid-forming (GFM) converters has been introduced for microgrids and islanded power systems. Recently, the concept has been proposed for use in wider interconnected transmission networks, and several control structures ...

Advanced Local Grid Control System for Offshore Wind Turbines with the Diode-Based Rectifier HVDC Link Implemented in a True Scalable Test Bench

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
Diode-based HVDC link technology is considered an alternative to reduce the cost and complexity of offshore HVDC platforms. When this technology is used, the AC grid of the wind farm must be created artificially. This paper proposes an advanced frequency

Unified Virtual Oscillator Control for Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Converters [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, 2021
A unified virtual oscillator controller (uVOC) is proposed, which enables a unified analysis, design, and implementation framework for both grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) voltage source converters (VSCs). Oscillator based GFM controllers, such as dispatchable virtual oscillator control (dVOC), offer rigorous analytical framework with ...

Unified reference controller for flexible primary control and inertia sharing in multi-terminal voltage source converter-HVDC grids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Multi-terminal dc (MTDC) grids are expected to be built and experience rapid expansion in the near future as they have emerged as a competitive solution for transmitting offshore wind generation and overlaying their ac counterpart. The concept of inertia
