Navigation Patterns and Scent Marking: Underappreciated Contributors to Hippocampal and Entorhinal Spatial Representations?

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2018
According to the currently prevailing theory, hippocampal formation constructs and maintains cognitive spatial maps. Most of the experimental evidence for this theory comes from the studies on navigation in laboratory rats and mice, typically male ...

Resolving the Cu(bdc) Conundrum: Identifying Non‐Porous Packing of Prototypical Coordination‐Network Thin Films Combining Advanced Diffraction Techniques and Computational Modelling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed Cu(bdc) forms prototypical MOF thin films for which a multitude of not fully satisfactory structural models have been suggested. Combining rotating grazing‐incidence diffraction and X‐ray reflectivity on two complementary samples with density‐functional theory, we first discard the previously suggested models and then identify a non ...

Stem-cell depletion and grid therapy

open access: yesThe British Journal of Radiology, 1989
The stem-cell depletion hypothesis postulates that there exists for each organ a limiting critical volume, which can be repopulated by a single surviving stem cell and for which damage can be repaired by repopulation (Yaes & Kalend, 1988; Yaes et al, 1988).

Correlation structure of grid cells is preserved during sleep [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The network of grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex forms a fixed reference frame for mapping physical space. The mechanistic origin of the grid representation is unknown, but continuous attractor network (CAN) models explain multiple fundamental ...

How the brain makes sense of the world: May-Britt Moser and the 2014 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine [PDF]

open access: yesThe Ukrainian Biochemical Journal
For hundreds of years, thinkers have tried to unravel the mystery of the brain and the ways the brain makes sense of the world. In recent decades, prominent neuroscientists have come close to solving this phenomenon and have provided crucial information ...

Interlayer Expansion of Bulk MoS2 via Top‐Down Organic Pillaring Enables Tunable Li+ Intercalation and Controlled Solvent Co‐Intercalation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Top‐down organic pillaring expands the interlayer spacing of bulk‐sized MoS2 particles while preserving the bulk morphology. Operando X‐ray diffraction and electrochemical dilatometry show that MoS2‐bulk undergoes solvent co‐intercalation in diglyme electrolyte, causing large structural expansion, while pillared, expanded MoS2 suppresses solvent uptake

Myrcene‐Based Tailored Co‐Polymers as Active Pharmaceutical Excipients: Bio‐Based Solutions for Mucoadhesive Excipients

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mucoadhesive amphiphilic block and statistical copolymers were synthesized via Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer polymerization from bio‐sourced myrcene and polyethylene glycol methacrylate. The resulting polymers exhibit narrow molar‐mass distributions, high regioselectivity, well‐defined microstructures, and tend to self‐assemble into ...

The Art of grid fields: Geometry of neuronal time

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2016
The discovery of grid cells in the entorhinal cortex has both elucidated our understanding of spatial representations in the brain, and germinated a large number of theoretical models regarding the mechanisms of these cells’ striking spatial firing ...

Engineering MnNiPx Cathode via Dual Role of Mn: Simultaneous Enhancement of Activity and Intermittent Operation Durability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering MnNiPx cathodes through the dual role of Mn simultaneously improves hydrogen evolution reaction activity and intermittent‐operation durability. Mn preferentially oxidizes to protect Ni–P sites from irreversible oxidation, while metallic Mn incorporation enhances the HER kinetics of Ni–P active layer.
