A Semantic Grid Service for Experimentation with an Agent-Based Model of Land-Use Change [PDF]

open access: yes
Agent-based models, perhaps more than other models, feature large numbers of parameters and potentially generate vast quantities of results data. This paper shows through the FEARLUS-G project (an ESRC e-Social Science Initiative Pilot Demonstrator ...

A Decision-Support Framework for Contracted Demand and Tariff Management in Brazilian Group A Consumers

open access: yesEnergies
Large electricity consumers under Brazilian Group A tariffs face a cost–risk trade-off when defining contracted demand, since inadequate sizing leads either to payments for unused capacity or to penalties for exceeding regulatory limits.

High‐Performance Piezoelectric Nanogenerators Based on Wurtzite BeO Nanowire Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates high‐performance piezoelectric nanogenerators based on 1D BeO nanowire arrays. The BeO nanowires exhibit a high piezoelectric coefficient (∼15.8 pm V−1) and deliver an output voltage of ∼26.1 V and power density of ∼0.32 µW cm−2.

Machine Learning Enables Inverse Design of Optically Driven Microscopic Metavehicles

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Machine‐learning‐based inverse design is used optimize “metavehicles” — flat microparticles based on metagratings that generate a strong lateral optical force from normally incident light. The optimized design exhibits a force efficiency of ∼88% and a measured propulsion speed in water much higher than previously reported, demonstrating that inverse ...
