Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Lexically Constrained Decoding for Sequence Generation Using Grid Beam Search

open access: yes, 2017
We present Grid Beam Search (GBS), an algorithm which extends beam search to allow the inclusion of pre-specified lexical constraints. The algorithm can be used with any model that generates a sequence $ \mathbf{\hat{y}} = \{y_{0}\ldots y_{T}\} $, by ...

Fully coherent follow-up of continuous gravitational-wave candidates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown isolated sources is computationally limited due to the enormous parameter space that needs to be covered and the weakness of the expected signals.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Grid-search method for short-term over long-term average parameter tuning: an application to Stromboli explosion quakes

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
The collection of a significant catalogue of seismo-volcanic data involves the selection of relevant parts of raw signals, which can be automatised by using the short-term over long-term average (STA/LTA) method.

Application of Artificial Neural Networks for Developing Temperature-Dependent Fragility Curves for Vulnerability Assessment of I-Girder Bridges [PDF]

open access: yesNumerical Methods in Civil Engineering
Although previous investigations have shown that a bridge’s overall capacity may remain largely intact after a fire, its seismic performance in the aftermath of such events remains poorly understood.

Early Diagnosis of COVID-19 Images Using Optimal CNN Hyperparameters

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2022
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a worldwide epidemic that poses substantial health hazards. However, COVID-19 diagnostic test sensitivity is still restricted due to abnormalities in specimen processing.

Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.
