HIV‐1 establishes immediate latency in T cells expressing the viral Nef protein

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Nef is a viral protein often omitted from HIV‐1 reporter viruses. Consequently, its role in viral latency is unclear. We developed three novel dual reporter HIV‐1 derivatives that express Nef and allow for detection of latent and productive infection. Using these reporters, we show that Nef does not affect the establishment of immediate viral latency ...

Alternative Grit Models: Explorations Into the Psychometric Properties of Grit-S and Academic Performance

open access: yesInternational Journal of Educational Psychology
Grit, the passion for achieving long-term goals, has been conceived as a two-dimensional construct (Consistency of interest and Perseverance of effort). The construct is well known for its easy measurement and its relationship with performance, including

Organic fertilizer abrasive grits increase soil available nitrogen, plant height, and biomass

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences & Environment, 2020
In organic cropping systems, air‐propelled abrasive grits can be used to control in‐row weeds. If the applied abrasive grit is an approved organic fertilizer, these applications may serve a dual purpose of weed control and crop fertility. Laboratory soil

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) for Iranian dental students

open access: yesJournal of Medical Education Development
Background & Objective: Non-cognitive and personality variables, such as grit, have been shown to play an important role in medical science education. In order to facilitate studies in this field, it is necessary to have a reliable and valid instrument ...

Personality attributes that predict cadet performance at West Point [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Using data from the United States Military Academy at West Point (N = 1102 and N = 1049) from two successive years, we examined psychological measures of cadets and the correlations of those measures with consequential outcomes such as cadet performance ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.
