How much lox is a grizzly bear worth? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2012
Using grizzly bears as surrogates for "salmon ecosystem" function, the authors develop a generalizable ecosystem-based management framework that enables decision makers to quantify ecosystem-harvest tradeoffs between wild and human recipients of natural ...

Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Safety of Subcutaneous Belimumab in Pediatric Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Multicenter, Open‐Label Trial

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective This study aimed to characterize the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, safety, and exploratory efficacy of subcutaneous belimumab in pediatric patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) receiving standard therapy. Methods This single‐arm, multicenter, open‐label trial (GSK study 200908; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier ...

Perception of human-derived risk influences choice at top of the food chain. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
On human-used landscapes, animal behavior is a trade-off between maximizing fitness and minimizing human-derived risk. Understanding risk perception in wildlife can allow mitigation of anthropogenic risk, with benefits to long-term animal fitness.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Might macronutrient requirements influence grizzly bear–human conflict? Insights from nutritional geometry

open access: yesEcosphere, 2016
Knowledge of carnivore nutritional requirements offers a potentially powerful aid for conservation and management strategies, yet has received little attention.

Mama Grizzly and the polar bears [PDF]

open access: yesEMBO reports, 2012
Mis‐reporting of the science behind climate change has called into question the judgement and integrity of scientists. Howy argues that better communication between scientists and journalists is needed, to restore public confidence in both.

Laser Metal Powder Deposition of Titanium Microalloyed HSLA Steel FeC0.12Si0.25Mn1.3

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the additive manufacturing of titanium‐doped high‐strength low‐alloy (HSLA) steel via laser metal deposition. It reveals distinct process‐structure relationships for elemental powder blends compared to prealloyed feedstocks.

Informing aerial total counts with demographic models: population growth of Serengeti elephants not explained purely by demography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Conservation management is strongly shaped by the interpretation of population trends. In the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania, aerial total counts indicate a striking increase in elephant abundance compared to all previous censuses.

A Topology Optimization Framework for the Inverse Design of Nonlinear Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work uses topology optimization to design unit cells for mechanical metamaterials with a prescribed nonlinear stress–strain response. The framework adds contact and postbuckling modeling to synthesize microstructures for three highly nonlinear responses, including pseudoductile behavior, monostable with snap‐through buckling, and bistable ...
