Effect of ground cover on splash and sheetwash erosion over a steep forested hillslope: A plot-scale study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The contributions and relationships of erosion by splash and overland flow over a steep slope in a Japanese beech forest in plots with different percentages of ground cover were examined.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Investigation of turbulence effect on the free space optical link for ground-to-train communications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
There is a growing demand for high mobility and ultrafast internet/data services which drives the motivation for free space optical (FSO) communications for high speed trains.

Passive Aeroelastic Control of a Near-Ground Airfoil with a Nonlinear Vibration Absorber

open access: yesAerospace
This study explores the use of a passive control technique to mitigate aeroelastic effects on a wing operating near the ground. An aeroelastic model, based on a typical airfoil section, equipped with a nonlinear tuned vibration absorber (NLTVA), is ...

Ground Viscous Effect on 3D Flow Structure of a Compound Wing-in-Ground Effect

open access: yesInternational Journal of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, 2014
The wing-in-ground-effect craft is a new means for traveling on rivers, lakes, and at sea between islands. In this study, the effect of boundary layers due to the ground viscous effect on the aerodynamic coefficients of the compound wing of a WIG craft was numerically investigated.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

A Physics- and Data-Driven Study on the Ground Effect on the Propulsive Performance of Tandem Flapping Wings

open access: yesAerospace
In this paper, we present a physics- and data-driven study on the ground effect on the propulsive performance of tandem flapping wings. With numerical simulations, the impact of the ground effect on the aerodynamic force, energy consumption, and ...
